Error "You have either selected a tax liability account on a transaction where it's not allowed, or haven't specified a tax rate along with it." when trying to reconcile

Sales Tax is now automatically going to a Chart of Accounts Global Sales Tax liability account - I did not set up this account.

Error "You have either selected a tax liability account on a transaction where it's not allowed, or haven't specified a tax rate along with it." when trying to reconcile

Hello there, Janette. I'd like to share the sales tax entries in your Chart of Accounts and help you fix the error so you can smoothly reconcile your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account.

The error message you received is an issue between your computer or device and the QBO servers. However, QuickBooks can behave unexpectedly due to browser problems.

To fix this, you can try accessing your QuickBooks account through a private browsing window to see if it is a browser-related issue. You can use the following shortcut keys to access incognito mode:

  • Safari: Control + Option + P
  • Google Chrome: Press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + N

If this works, it means that you need to clear the browser's cache so the system can start fresh. If you get the same result, I recommend switching to a different supported browser.

Additionally, Global Tax Payable occurs when the customer pays their invoices outside the US. Sales Tax Payable is automatically converted to Global Tax Payable once you have a customer with a different currency, and then you enter sales transaction on it. On the other hand, Sales Tax Payable only occurs when the customer pays their invoices inside the US.

Furthermore, if there are discrepancies after the reconciliation process, you can check this article: Fix issues at the end of a reconciliation in QuickBooks Online.

Feel free to post here or reply below if you have concerns about sales tax and reconciliation in your QuickBooks Online account. I'm here to lend a hand. Stay safe.

Error "You have either selected a tax liability account on a transaction where it's not allowed, or haven't specified a tax rate along with it." when trying to reconcile

I reviewed the above and cleared all of my cache and still I see no Banking tab.  I am continuing to see the error stated above and I cannot link the payments for sales tax to the liability account.  I am using Chrome, if that helps to know.

Please advise!

Thank you!

@RheaMaeH  "However, QuickBooks can behave unexpectedly due to browser problems."

Is it really unexpected when the vast majority of QBO's issues appear to be browser related?

After so many years of hearing to clear the cache, you really have to wonder.
