File already open

When I try to open a company file, I get a message that it can not be opened for whatever reason.  If I try to use repair doctor, I get the message that the file is already open, but it is not.  I can see the file in my folders but it will not open.

Hello @Library Inc ,

In QuickBooks Desktop, you can repair the installation information to get rid of any error prompt messages. I want to ensure that you can successfully access your company data so you can get back to business in no time.

That said, here's how you can repair QuickBooks and make sure to close it before following the steps below:

  1. Go to Start.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Under Programs and Features, select Uninstall a Program.
  4. Click QuickBooks, and select Uninstall/Change.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Click Finish.

Once done, you can consider restarting your computer before opening QuickBooks. In addition, here's an article you can read to learn more about how the Repair tool works: Repair your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows.

Need help performing any tasks related to your business account and company settings, click here to access and browse all articles for QuickBooks products. This reference contains most resources with steps on how you can update your data and security management, to name a few.

Don't hesitate to post again here if you have other questions or concerns with QuickBooks tasks and navigations. I'm always around happy to help. Stay safe and have a good one!

I appreciate you for performing some troubleshooting to isolate this issue, @Library Inc. I'm here to share with you some additional resolution so you can open your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) file successfully.

If repairing QuickBooks doesn't resolve the issue, you can proceed with uninstalling and reinstalling QuickBooks using the clean install process to fix your company file issues.

First, uninstall QuickBooks:

  1. Open the Windows Start menu. Search for “Control Panel”, then open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs and Features or Uninstall a Program.
  3. From the list of programs, select the version of QuickBooks Desktop you want to uninstall.
  4. Tap on Uninstall/Change, then Remove. Select Next.  If you don’t see this option, sign out and sign back into Windows as an admin (or a user with admin rights).

When you’re done, reinstall QuickBooks Desktop.

Alternatively, you can restore a recent backup of your file and fix the data damage in your company file.

If you need further assistance, you can connect with our Support Team. A live representative can check out your account securely and investigate the error you had.

Please feel free to get back to me here for any additional questions about opening your file. I always have your back. Keep safe!

Can you open the sample file or create a dummy one? If you are using QBD 2020 or older version, install the trial license of QBD 2021 to open the file.
