File will open on Desktop but not Laptop

Good afternoon.

My environment:

Quickbooks Pro 2020 installed on laptop and desktop computers, both running Windows 10.  File is normally stored on a mapped network drive in a dedicated Quickbooks directory.  As the only user of the file, I trust myself to not do something stupid like trying to open it simultaneously on both computers.  As such it is setup as a single user environment.

When I travel, I copy the entire dedicated Quickbooks directory to a SD card, and do any necessary accounting if and when it is needed.  Upon return I copy the directory back to the mapped network drive and over-write the files.  This will then necessitate "forgetting" the file that was stored on the SD card and pointing to the mapped drive to properly load the file.

I have just returned from a trip.  I copied the file from the SD card to the mapped drive.  I can load the file on the desktop computer.  Everything is fine on the desktop computer.

I started the laptop and Quickbooks 2020.  It first noted that an update was available; I downloaded and installed the update.  I then attempted to load the file from the mapped network drive.  On the first several attempted to do so I received a message that I had insufficient permissions to access the directory.  I have complete read-write administrator-level control over the entire mapped drive, as well as the directory.  I persisted for several attempted with small changes, hoping to resolve the problem.  No luck.  It has now deteriorated to the point where the file open process will not even display the mapped drives on the laptop.  I have not yet tried to copy the directory to the SD card or the internal hard drive to see if that works.

Thank you in advance for any assistance that you can provide.  Oh, and just in case it matters, I have not installed the software upgrade on the desktop computer.

File will open on Desktop but not Laptop

Hello, DJMangen.

It's my priority to get this working for you. The File won't open in QuickBooks Desktop can be fixed by downloading the QuickBooks Tool Hub. This tool is designed to automatically diagnose and fix common issues within the software.

Below are the instructions on how to do it:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the most recent version (1.4.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Save the file somewhere you can easily find it.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. When the install finishes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.
  6. Once the  QuickBooks Tool Hub is open, select Program Problems
  7. Select Quick Fix my Program.
  8. Start QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.

To make sure the software is properly updated, please restart the computer after running the tool.

You can refer to this article for a complete guide on the process of fixing issues within the software: QuickBooks Desktop won't open, has stopped working, or not responding

Also, we need to make sure that your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) has the latest release. There are two ways to download the update. You can either perform the process within the software or download the patch through the website. Please refer to this article for further guidance: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.

As always, you can contact our QuickBooks Support team if you need assistance with the steps. They'll be able to pull up your account in a secure environment and help you navigate using one of their tools.

Please click the Reply button below if you have any other issues or concerns, and I'll get back to you right away. I'm always here to assist. Have a wonderful day!

File will open on Desktop but not Laptop

Thank you for trying.  Unfortunately, this did not work.  I tried both the Quick Fix and the more advanced tools, including system reboots after each. Same issue.  Found and renamed the *.ini file.  The software then tried to march me through setting up a new Intuit account and starting a whole new business.  Great!  Just what I need to do.

Are there any real solutions as opposed to these canned replies?

Never mind; I resolved the situation by changing permissions on the network drive to full access for everyone.
