To replace QB Desktop or QB Online?

I was thinking maybe certain taxing agencies want to be able to demand access in an audit....? I've no experience that proves this. But selling client data to companies makes more sense. Intuit also owns Credit Karma and Mailchimp. Online software allows QBs to have access to everything too. 

Are there any selected partners who will actually sell this?  Apparently, Intuit doesn't want to sell it. Every time I've tried to buy it, they give me so much crap that I end up having to just close the Window. I've been playing around with GnuCash, but I have a bunch of historical data in QB 2019. 

If push comes to shove—and it certainly looks like Intuit wants to shove me—I guess I'll just abandon all my historical data and start fresh with GnuCash.

I've never seen a company that hates its customers so much.

I started the process, right up to the point of entering my CC number and checking out, and it seems a straightforward online purchase...

I was able to purchase Desktop Pro 2024 back in July but that was after I spent my time starting on June 18th with them PUSHING the online (QBO) on me. It was a total nightmare for about a month where I was told I'd have to purchase a new computer which I did. I loaded my Desktop Pro 2022 disk I had purchased (I think this is when they stopped producing that kind of product) onto the new laptop I had purchased. Then I spoke with someone in sales that guided me how to do it inside your desktop program. I was sent an email last month from Crook Books stating that the Desktop Pro version was only going to be available until September 30, 2024. After that you cannot get it. It can only be downloaded as I'm not aware of anywhere to purchase it. I get what you're saying because I've used QB for more than 30 years. They just DO NOT care. I've got maybe 2 more years and I'm done with it all.

Well, it looks like I got lucky. My accountant says that I can keep using the one I have. I'll just quit making OS upgrades on this Mac, as I'm about due to get a new one, anyway. I'm retiring in a few more years. So, hopefully, I'm going to make it without ever having to buy from them again.

Meanwhile, I am kind of playing around with GnuCash. If, somehow, I need something beyond my planned retirement, I'll switch to that.

I hope Quickbooks gets what they deserve, which is to be consigned to the dustbin of history.

Outside of Intuit/Quickbooks. Like I used to be able to purchase the physical program from Office Depot. That is how I obtained 2022. Now Crook Books is making that impossible come September 30th.

You can purchase a new, legit license through Fiat Lux and get $100 cashback. You can ask them to pay for the license once you have it installed and running without any issues. They will also share another option if don't need to run any add-ons (e.g QB Payroll).

I did find a replacement for QB Desktop and it was Freshbooks. Because of the stabbing that took place from Intuit management that decided to levy a MASSIVE price gouge, I went with Freshbooks. And the thing is, they are not much cheaper but I WILL NOT support a company that puts the customer last. Sure, raise the prices, GRADUALLY, but keep the services in place. Then place a deprecation path for the Desktop version but to cut and raise is dumb. I would have paid more for the Desktop software but the Cloud version IS NOT more secure then the Desktop version, this coming from an IT Consultant.

Not sure why getting a box at a retail store is important to you? In any case, you can get desktop, which seems to be what you were asking for?

The only difference between getting the box at retail and buying it from Intuit on their site is that you have to download it - which should take about two minutes.  It's basically a non-difference.

Actually, it is quite a bit of a difference.  Being able to buy it retail (now in the past), the version was supported by intuit for 3 years, therefore paying for it once every three years.  Now, getting it through QuickBooks, you have to pay for it every year, at an increased price of course, thus more than tripling the price.

Also, we are forced to pay the monthly payroll fee, even though we don't use their payroll service!  Complete corporate greed.  We will being changing platforms next year before our May renewal.

Enhanced Payroll requires a separate subscription and you can cancel at any time. Unless you have purchased a bundle license before. You need to purchase a new license without the payroll feature.

Nope, but that is the point in that QB stuck it to the end-user by doing this that I am more than happy to NOT give Intuit my business. The FORCE to cloud and the almost three times price jump is simply a price gouge, and I will not support an organization that is just fine in doing this.

Very good summary as to the Intuit price gouge. But since they are applying a 300% price increase, they are not worried about the lost revenue from us, they are MORE THEN MAKING IT UP under the price increase. 

I cannot tell if you are simply acknowledging what he is saying as being correct or somehow trying to contradict it. It looks like he is stating a fact, not asking.

The pay-every-year model not new or unique to QuickBooks 2024. It's been that way for three version-years, if I remember correctly.

The location you purchase doesn't matter. QuickBooks 2022 and 2023 were sold at retail (I think) only as "Plus" versions, which required an annual fee as well, and before that QuickBooks could be purchased either at retail or online as a the one-time purchase you mention, good for three years. The only difference with 2024 is that Intuit isn't selling it at retail anymore - but that doesn't change the subscription model, now three years old.

I'm not saying I like it either, as the plan to discontinue QuickBooks Desktop (except for Enterprise) is idiotic. Intuit is shooting themselves in the foot, and it appears to be unable to build a version of QuickBooks Online that is even close in functionality to Pro, the most basic version of QuickBooks Desktop. I've no idea how their upper management is unaware of this basic fact, but it's going to really surprise them when the majority of Desktop users refuse to convert to Online, or do so only to cancel their subscriptions shortly after.

Well, like I mentioned, I found out from my accountant that I can stick with 2019. I'll just make sure the OS doesn't get updated to the point where I can't use QB 2019 anymore. 

And, when the day comes that I can't use QB, I'll switch to GnuCash, or whatever else is available at the time. 

If QB doesn't want me as a customer—and it very much appears from the way they treat me, and what their reps say when they chat with me that they don't—then fine. I don't have to give my money to people who don't want to sell me what I want to buy.
