Thanks for joining the Community space, @laura-clubandcou.

You can download the QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) 2020 trial version, to move your file to QuickBooks Online. Also, the error usually comes up when you're using an unsupported QuickBooks Desktop version (2013 or older).

Before doing so, you'll want to create a backup copy of your 2013 files and download a trial of QuickBooks Desktop. Then, use the license and product number found in this article: Download a trial of QuickBooks Desktop.

After downloading and installing the trial version, upgrade your company file so you can open it from QuickBooks Desktop 2020.

Once done, convert your QBDT file to QBO. Here's how:

  1. Go to File, then Utilities.
  2. Select Copy Company File for QuickBooks Online (see image below).
  3. Save your file on your desktop. Then, click OK once exported successfully.
  4. Sign-in to your QBO account. Then, the Choose online company▼ drop-down.
  5. Choose the account you want to be replaced, then Continue.
  6. Enter “Agree” in the text field, then Replace.
  7. Click Yes, go ahead and replace the data, then Replace.

You can refer to this article for details about moving your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.

Also, note that some data might not convert to QuickBooks Online. Here's a complete list of what to expect after the conversion process: What to expect when you switch from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.

I've added our QuickBooks Support page. It contains articles, video tutorials, and more that'll guide you with QBO.

Should you have any other concerns or follow-up questions, you can always find me here. Have a pleasant day ahead.

@laura-clubandcou

Open your company file on the the trial license of QBD 2020 as mentioned by Joesem M. Make sure you have open a QBO account prior to proceed.

You may also look at speaking to a 3rd party provider who will do the conversion for you.

@Bennix88

Which QB Desktop year version did you use? 2013 or else?

Do you need to migrate data to QB Online or upgrade your version to QBD 2021/2022?

I can help you get the validation code, Bennix88.

We have different ways to locate the validation code in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). I'd be pleased to share that with you so you can re-access your account without delay.

Validation codes are used to activate a QBDT product. To get this one, you'll want to check if you received an email with the validation code from our support the first time you installed it on your old device. You can retrieve it from there.

If you can't find it, I'd suggest contacting our Customer Care Support. They have the specific tools to generate codes so you can successfully re-open your account.

Here's how:

  1. Go to this QBDT help link.
  2. Select your product and click Continue.
  3. Enter your concern in the box and tap Continue.
  4. Choose either Chat with us or Have us call you.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Make sure to contact them within business hours to ensure a swift response.

Once you have the code already, you may re-activate your account. Then if you want to migrate your data to QuickBooks Online, you can follow the steps provided by Joesem M.

When you switch to QuickBooks Online (QBO), you may notice differences in how your books appear. But no worries, we have an article to help you understand how your data are moved. Click this link for more details: Learn how features and data transfer from QBDT to QBO.

Additionally, don't forget to compare your financial reports and other data after migrating. Doing this will ensure that your books are accurate at all times. For more guidance, check out what to do after you move from QBDT for Windows or Mac to QBO.
