I used to be able to move a sub customer to another parent or make it stand alone. Then I couldn't. and I've been on here many times asking why that changed..

and there were only "around the world"comments about doing a bunch of stuff, not just uncheck and click and you're done. Now I find I can do that on some accounts 2 years old and older...and then there are instances where I can't change other old ones...

Let me provide you a few information on how to change a sub-customer to a parent account, Shadyal.

You can only change a sub-customer to a parent account or vice versa if you haven't had any existing transactions like invoices from your sub-customer. You may want to delete those invoices first so you'll be able to update your sub-customer to a parent account. Once done, you can manually enter the invoices again. To delete an invoice, follow the steps below:

  1. Click Sales on the left pane.
  2. Choose Invoices on the upper part of your screen.
  3. Click the box beside the Date to batch delete all the invoices
  4. Click Batch actions drop-down arrow, select Delete.
  5. Click Yes.

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), we have different kinds of reports that will give the information you need. For your reference, please take time to read this article: Run reports in QuickBooks Online.

Keep me posted if you have any concerns about moving the sub-customer to the parent account. I'll always make sure to get back to you.

so what you're telling me is to remove all the history and then replace it?

WHY was this not the case before when I could simply uncheck the "sub customer" box ?

Do you realize how much work that is when one has 300 sub customers to move to parent status?

AND why is it QBO allows me to move some and not others....for a minute I thought ones 2 years old could be moved but when I tried one form 2014 I got the same "that doesn't work, sucker" response

nothing...if anyone is thinking about doing the sub customer option I'd suggest a workaround like we did before we were on QB....example, parent customer being "Big Company" use "BC" for short, putting it in front of customer name:  BC/customer1

Better advice than I've gotten for QB folks...

When you are dealing with legal firms that have clients, that change often. Being able to change them from one firm to another WAS  a good feature. But leave it to QB to screw something up. I'm almost to the point of going back to the paper and pencil method. At least I could move customers to where they need to be instead of deleting their entire history just to put them under a new firm.  Well done, Intuit! Here's a hint — You are not intuitive!

Candace..I'm sorry to say this but your "suggestion" does nothing but irritate me and no doubt others who have dealt with this and QB's indifference!

I have tried to contact them. Absolutely no response. I fill out those stupid survey forms complaining about problems. Absolutely no response. So how are we supposed to get our issues across when Absolutely no one listens? If I see one more of those stupid surveys asking how great Intuit is I think I'll vomit all over the computer.

The only way to do it is to remove all invoices and payment history. My suggestion is to create a report with all the sub-cusomers you want to move and export it to excel, change any information necessary. Then import those customers in as new ccustomers You will likely have to make some change to the name, or they will show up and already being in the customer list and unable to add.

thanks but hell no...I don't have the heartbeats left to do that...the point is the nerds at intuit had it where I could move from on parent to another ..then they changed it and give me no good reason why....this is an unpleasant marriage between me and them...
