Inventory serial number tracking

I am trying to find an easy solution to tracking inventory serial numbers with quickbooks desktop.  I have looked into Enterprise but it seems to offer a lot that we wouldn't use.  My issue is we do sales and rental of our equipment.  Which means that the same serial numbered item may change hands multiple times due to end of rental, warranty replacement, customer returns.  Right now we're tracking only using text typed in on the description line.  It's making tracking very difficult.  Isn't there a simple, cost effective way to handle this?

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Inventory serial number tracking

You've come to the right place, @JeanLutzNA.

I have some information about tracking serial numbers. Managing complex inventory such as serial numbers is only available in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. It has the Advanced Inventory function, one of the time-saving features of the program. This enables you to use the following:

  • FIFO costing
  • Multiple location inventory
  • Bar code scanning
  • Bin or lot tracking
  • Serial or lot numbers
  • Sales order fulfillment process (Site Operations)

Here's how it looks like in the set up:

You can visit our site to learn more about this feature. Here's the link: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/desktop/enterprise/advanced-inventory/.

However, if you wish to stay with your current QuickBooks version, your solution of adding the serial number in the description field will be a great workaround.

Consider having a rental management app to integrate with your QBD.
