I have some information about tracking serial numbers. Managing complex inventory such as serial numbers is only available in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. It has the Advanced Inventory function, one of the time-saving features of the program. This enables you to use the following:
- FIFO costing
- Multiple location inventory
- Bar code scanning
- Bin or lot tracking
- Serial or lot numbers
- Sales order fulfillment process (Site Operations)

However, if you wish to stay with your current QuickBooks version, your solution of adding the serial number in the description field will be a great workaround.
