merging inventory items from external feed

We use a system that updates our QB's inventory every 30  minutes for online orders that come in each day. However, when the information comes in, the item name coming over from online sales is never exactly the same, so it will show negative inventory. I have seen other forum discussions mention merging the 2 accounts. I think this solution will work for us, but I need to know if I will have to do this every time an order comes in with the different item name.

For example, our inventory item list will have this item: 107MOC15MED but the sales generated online for that sku comes in like this: 107MOC15MED+CM. I cannot change the other end, but I can change our QB. My question: if i merge them, will I just keep having the issue when that inventory item is ordered again? Will it add the new sku? Or will it recognize they are the same? My goal is for QB to recognize it as the same inventory item. Thanks in advance!

Yes, you're right, @@JessiePoo.

Since you're merging two inventory items with different information, you'll still the same error. This is because the system has its unique way of recognizing items imported in the system.

If the information that was imported in the system is the same as the ones you've created, then you'll have the option to merge them. Here's how:

  1. From the Lists menu, select Item List.
  2. Right-click the item you don’t want to use then select Edit Item.
  3. In the Edit Item window, change the item name to the same name as the item you’re combining it with.
  4. Select OK then, Yes to confirm that you want to merge the two items under the same name.

In addition, you can run the Inventory Valuation Summary report in QuickBooks. This will show the summary of quantity, average cost, and extended value of each of the inventory quantities and provides a total inventory valuation. Just go to Reports and select Inventory. Then, click the Inventory Valuation Summary report.
