Migrate

We are starting with QuickBooks Online at the beginning of our new fiscal year which is September 1. If I migrate from QuickBooks Desktop, does it move all information from the beginning of the desktop usage? Our desktop software starts in September of 2016.

Also, if we decide to do a clean start, how would I import 1099 information? W2s are done through a 3rd party, so there's no concern with them, but the 1099s are done in-house.

Open your company file and hit CTRL+1 keys. How big is your Total Target?

Second question, why did you decide to switch to QB Online instead of sticking with QB Desktop?

The total target is 327,116.

As for why we're switching, there are a lot of reasons, one being the automatic backup we have to the cloud. Our company doesn't have a server, so we don't have a constant backup being made, only a manual one.

You should be able to convert your data to QBO Essentials or Plus. Then you can use a 3rd party backup restore app.

Make sure to secure the backup of your QB Desktop files for the archive.

Migrate

Hi there, @bridgett. I'm here to help you migrate your data from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online and answer your query about importing 1099.

Since QuickBooks Desktop 2016 is no longer supported, you need to upgrade your company file to the latest version.

To upgrade your file, we recommend downloading the trial version of QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) using this link: QuickBooks Desktop Downloads and Updates. Furthermore, moving to QuickBooks online requires the latest version of QuickBooks Desktop.

For more guidance in converting your data, here's a great resource that you can check out: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.

However, if you don't want to upgrade the software, you can move your books from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online with an online tool.

On the other hand, the option to import 1099 in QuickBooks is unavailable. However, you can manually enter their 1099 info or send them an invite to fill in the W-9 information. Alternatively, you can look for a third-party application that allows you to import your 1099 in QuickBooks.

Here's how:

  1. Log in to your QuickBooks Online account.
  2. From the left pane, click on Apps.
  3. Search for apps in the search box.

QuickBooks displays the list of applications available that matches the description you entered. Once you find the right app, click to open it.

You can also visit this link for a better view: https://apps.intuit.com/. From there, you can find different apps that are compatible and designed to work with QuickBooks Online.

To learn more about inviting a contractor in QuickBooks Online, please check out this article: Invite a contractor to add their own 1099 tax info.

Please let us know if you have any other concerns about migrating your files and importing your tax forms. Have a nice day.
