Parent and Subaccounts

Hello,

I'm not sure of the exact terminology I am looking for. I'll try my best to explain what I am trying to do. The company currently has their jobs listed out one by one in the customer list. However many of these jobs should be under a main company. So let's say ABC Co. is a customer. Instead of having ABC Co listed as the primary, then every job we have for them listed under them as a sub, they are all broken out indivdually. So I am not able to print a simple statement for customers, or see how much profit was made from each parent company as a whole. It's job by job. I know there is a way to set this up moving forward (I believe it's hierarchical view). But what I really want to know is there a way to fix what is already existing? How do I create an ABC parent company then move all of their jobs(already entered) under that new parent company? Is that possible? And if so can it be a bulk update because I am going to have to do this for thousands of orders. Any help is much appreacited, thanks in advance!

Parent and Subaccounts

Welcome to the QuickBooks forum, @CM Eichenlaub. Providing a way to create an ABC parent company and adding a bulk update for thousands of orders is my pleasure.

Yes, there's a way to fix what is already existing. Since it's possible, you can bulk-update them by following these steps:

  1. Go to the File at the top menu.
  2. Select Utilities, then Export and click Lists to IIF Files.
  3. Tick the Job Type List, then hit OK.
  4. In the Save in dropdown, choose a location where you can Save the file.

After that, make the necessary changes using Microsoft Excel. To proceed, follow the steps below:

  1. In Microsoft Excel, go to File and click Open.
  2. Select All Files in the File type dropdown.
  3. Choose the file to edit, then tap Open.
  4. In the Text Import Wizard, select Next, then Next and Finish.
  5. Make some updates, then Save it through the File menu.
  6. Exit Excel. You'll get a prompt to save the IIF again. Select Don't Save.

Once done, refer to this article for the complete steps to import IIFs: Export, import, and edit IIF files. It includes the import and export limitations.

With this information, you can bulk-update the jobs under a parent company or customer conveniently. If you have follow-up questions, add them here. I'll be here to answer them for you.
