Point of Sale Pro ver 10-18 multi user mode unreliable.

We’ve been using Intuit point 0f sale pro for the last 12 years and have never had good reliability with other workstations being able to connect. We have tried new computers different networks and pretty much everything else the only solution we have found is to set the company file to single user mode and then switch it back to multi-user mode. It's a manual process and, pretty slow. My assumption is that this will never work reliable since no one at Intuit has ever been able to fix it and we have been on versions 10 through 18 and the problem always persists. My question to the community is if there is a way to script the POS to switch to single user mode and then back to multi-user mode so I would be able to use windows scheduler to make this happen daily?

Thanks for your ideas.

Pleased to see you here in the Community. I'm here to help set up your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to multi-user mode, @roguefarmers.

Yes, you can switch between single-user and multi-user mode in POS and use the window scheduler. Before doing so, Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and wireless networks tend to be low bandwidth (slow) aren't recommended for use with Point of Sale. These network configurations may be unreliable.

To switch between modes:

  1. Select the File menu at the upper part of your screen.
  2. Click Switch Company File to Multi-User Mode or Switch Company File to Single User Mode.
  3. Follow any on-screen instructions.

Also, let's manually configure the Windows firewall. It helps you refresh the connection between the server and the other PC. I'll guide you on how.

  1. Press Windows+R on your keyboard to open the run command.
  2. Enter control, then click OK to open the Control Panel.
  3. Set the "view by" to Small Icons and select Windows Firewall.
  4. Choose Advanced Settings and click Inbound.
  5. Click New Rule.
  6. Select Port and click Next.
  7. Type in the port numbers and click Next
  8. Choose Allow Connection and choose Next.
  9. Name your firewall rule, such as POS, and click Finish
  10. Repeat steps 5 - 9 to create a new Outbound Rule.

However, if the issue persists, perform Solution 3 - 5 through this article: Troubleshoot Multi-user Issues in POS

You might also consider reading this handy article that will discuss more access limits in single or multi-user mode: Tasks that can be performed in a single or multi-user mode in QuickBooks Desktop.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if you should have any questions about this or anything else. Take care and have a good one.

Hello, Joesem M

Thanks for the reply. For sure I have gone through the firewall configuration a couple of times to make sure I have not missed any steps.
I see that you mentioned that I would be able to use the window scheduler. I did not see how to do that looking at your instructions. Maybe I missed something?

I've got you covered, roguefarmers.

I've got just the answer you're looking for about the window scheduler in QuickBooks Point of Sale.

As of the moment, the window scheduler will work only in single-user mode. With this, I'd recommend switching to a single user every time you've used the feature.

I understand that using windows scheduler daily without switching different modes is a great part of your business. So, allow me to take note of this idea.

Lastly, you can always visit our Point of Sale User Guide for your later reference. This PDF contains a step-by-step guide to features and tasks.

Notify me in the comment section if you have additional questions. I'm willing to help. Take good care.

I don't think you read my question correctly. The only reason I am switching back and forth between single and multi-user is to fix the broken database network connection. I have no-need for single user. I am trying to make this work in a multi-user environment. The reason I wanted to use the windows scheduler was to automate the process. This just furthers my point that no one can fix this.
