Preferences Greyed Out

I am the administrator of our QB file and most of the preferences are greyed out. How do I fix this?

Preferences Greyed Out

Hello, adusa.

There are a couple of solutions you can do to help fix the greyed out preference options. I'm more than happy to share them with you.

It's likely that the multi-user mode is preventing you from selecting the preferences options. Before anything else, you'll want to update QuickBooks Mac to the latest release. Next, switch back to Single User mode to fix this. Simply click the File menu then select Enable Single User mode

However, a damaged QuickBooks component can also cause the greyed out preference options. You'll want to reinstall the program using the clean install. Run through the steps in this article: Reinstall QuickBooks for Mac using clean install.

After fixing greyed out preference options, you can visit our articles if you need further help. We have a variety of published content to help users manage their company in QuickBooks Mac. Visit this page to get started.

Let me know if there's anything else you need to do in QuickBooks Mac. I'll share some guides or details on how to do things in the program.

While you can switch into single user mode its usually preferable to switch to File->Enable Multiuser Admin mode to change the preferences.  The Admin mode adjust the preferences without having to copy the file to the single user's machine.

sorry but your solution is not an option.  going to single user mode is not an option, only the "multi user mode" is there but it, too, like everything else, is greyed in

Preferences Greyed Out

Let's get your preferences set to single-user mode, NatashaFatale.

To be able to set your preferences, just make sure that no one else is logged in to QuickBooks and working on it. Then, in your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, you can click File and then Enable Multiuser Admin mode. You can now make changes to your preferences.

Further, here are some solutions to troubleshoot multi-user issues for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac. If the same thing happens, I suggest reaching out to us so we can verify why you are unable to toggle your preferences. Here's how:

  1. Go to this link: Contact QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
  2. Click Continue.
  3. Select Company file under the What can we help you with? section.
  4. Scroll down to the page where you see options on how to get in touch with us.
