As an accountant, why does QB Desktop no longer allow me to open a client's file in the version the client has? It is forcing me to update to the most current version on my computer.
Which QB Desktop year version do your client have?
Which QB Desktop Accountant year version do you have?
I can provide you with further information on this, bawc79.
Do you know what version of QuickBooks your client uses? Since as an accountant, it's important to have the most up-to-date QuickBooks Desktop software to ensure you have the latest available features. If the difference between the client is only one year and the accountant has the higher version, you can open an Accountant's copy using a different version.
Your client may have the higher version in this scenario. You'll have to upgrade your QuickBooks version to open it. Check out this article for more details: Use the Accountant's Copy.
I've got this resource to see the complete list of supported products in QuickBooks: QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation policy and upgrade information.

My client's file is QB2018. I have every year through 2021 on my computer. When I go to open her file it is making me update to the "newest version" to open the file. I need to walk her through some steps in recording transactions and need to make sure I'm looking at the same screens/options she has.
My client's file is in 2018 which I also have on my computer.
You are not using QB Desktop 2018 Accountant version, are you? If both of you are using QB Desktop 2018, it is very possible that you are using a lower release version than what your client has installed on their machine. Ask your client to hit f2 key and a product information will appear. Compare the release version of QB Desktop you are using. One of you may need to update the release version.
I'm already in a more current version than my client. I finally just told it to update as it wasn't giving me another option. The next screen advised me that I shouldn't do this as it is an accountant's copy and my client may not be able to accept changes. Accountant's changes have already been sent so that's not an issue. I'm done worrying about it as I've already spent way too much time on this. Thanks for trying to help.
