QBO for Educators/Students

First, let me say that QuickBooks has absolutely horrendous customer service. For one of the top-used software platforms, this is appalling!

We teach Quickbooks Online for Accountants using the curriculum with the same name published through Cengage. Last fall, we were able to easily help students sign up for a free QBO account to complete their coursework. We are just starting our new students and now are unable to do the same. Between myself, students and parents, we have spent well over 40 hours, collectively, trying to solve what appears to be an unsolvable problem.

The website: https://www.intuit.com/ca/partners/education-program/registration/student-quickbooks-online/, which we have always used to register students, only lists Canadian schools now. Clicking on the top right drop-down menu to select United States directs us to https://www.intuit.com/partners/education-program/, which is zero help.

I already have my institution email tied to QBO for Accountants, and when I try to use it to set up the new Educator Portal, I am obviously unable to because it is already in use. The only "semi-helpful" information I can find is that I need to first set up Educator Portal, then send invitations to each of my students, rather than the students registering independently as was done in the past.

1- All Intuit/QuickBooks chat supports regretfully inform me that they don't offer support for the educator accounts and point me in the direction of this website: https://www.intuit.com/partners/education-program/support/#student

2- Support for Education does not provide a phone number or chat support in any way. (However, I was able to contact the Canadian helpline for Educators, was given a number that supposedly took me to the U.S. support for educators, but was simply QuickBooks Online support who told me they were unable to help with the educator/student information.

3- We have been prompted to send an email to support that goes unanswered

4- Any and all websites with HELPFUL information is Canadian-based, and does not have the resources needed for U.S. customers.

This post is my last-ditch effort to try and generate some kind of help from Intuit QuickBooks.

Your QuickBooks Online support has told us numerous times now that they do not support Educator Portal. The information you gave me did not directly me to support for Educator Portal.

The link and steps you provided directed me to QuickBooks Online support, who I have contacted numerous times, and each time as told me that they do not offer support for Educator Portal.

The link you provided does not include support for Educator Portal.

Good morning wlindenberger!

No, I never did get a private message to discuss this issue. I ended up flailing through the educator portal set-up, and used 2 of my 5 "sample" accounts to allow students to log in as me and do their coursework.

From the educator portal, I was able to successfully invite a student to participate in a class; however, when they accessed QBO from that account, it looked entirely different than what we have been using in the past. Almost like it was a bare-bones, dumbed-down version of QBO. For example, the student was unable to add a new asset account for a large item in addition to defining the opening balance and choosing to track depreciation.

I am still trying to work my way through this. I think the intent was great, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. I don't believe I will be getting any further help from Intuit QuickBooks.

QBO for Educators/Students

Hello there, Dala.

It isn't the kind of experience we want you to come across.

When you invite a student, the system will ask for a code via text or email. The email address or phone number should be the same as what you've entered when signing up for QuickBooks.

This code helps us to secure your data to avoid any fraudulent activities.

When you're unable to pass through the verification step or if the email address and phone number are not active, you can reach out to our Phone Support agents. They have the tools that will guide you to pass the verification page.

Once your student accepts the invitation, they're good to use their QuickBooks account. Here's a reference to learn more: Register and activate a QuickBooks Online student trial.

I'll be around whenever you have other concerns with QuickBooks. I'm here to help you out!

@Adrian_A do you have any response as to why the platform for students has changed? This is very different and missing key elements compared to the student access they were granted in the past. It severely limits the educational experience for students to learn the platform, and in no way aligns with most current curriculum developed specifically for this purpose.

Does Intuit have their own curriculum with current updates that would align with this new change versus utilizing third party publications?

@AbegailS_

Please see attached photos for clarification. You can clearly see the difference between the typical dashboard versus the new student dashboard, and the typical new account entry versus the student's version.

In the past, the student's dashboard was no different than what the instructor saw.

The new screen for adding an account does not allow students to define whether it is a sub-account, nor does it allow them to set an opening balance and track depreciation.

Good evening, @gabi redey

Thanks for joining in on this thread. I'd be more than happy to direct you in the right direction so you're able to get a free student trial account with QuickBooks Online.

Since you've accidentally created a real account, I suggest canceling it before going forward. Here's how:

  1.  Go to the Gear icon in the top right-hand corner of your QuickBooks Online account.
  2. Choose Account and settings
  3. Select the Billing & Subscription tab.
  4. Tap Cancel subscription or cancel online
  5. Follow the rest of the on-screen steps.

After canceling, you can contact our Intuit Education support to help you set up your free student trial account.

This should do the trick. Don't hesitate to come back if you have any other concerns. Take care!

I am also having problems with the educator portal. Is there any way to speak with someone in support? There are times when a simple phone call can resolve a problem rather than 100 emails back and forth.

My students and I have been experiencing the same issue. I have used the web portal for several semesters, but this issue with student registration started in June of 2022. We located a working link in June (www.intuit.com/solutions/job-readiness-education/products/quickbooks/student-qbo-signup), but now this link also leads to the educator registration page. I could hear the frustration in my students' voices as I conducted a virtual class this evening, which only heightened my anxiety. So far, none of the expert advice has worked. This evening I chatted with an expert who suggested I contact sales support for a resolution. It appears that only Canadian students can register but not students from the USA. You would think that Intuit would have this problem fixed by now, considering the amount of communication surrounding the issue :(

I'm having the opposite issue of Gabi! I need my email to be unassociated to my student QBO account, but have zero way of doing that. When I asked for help via chat, they said they couldn't help me and directed me to the Canada website, who also said they couldn't help. I want to use my email for a professional account, but it's tied up in this education one.

Hello there, sammy_347.

The email address on your QuickBooks student account is important since we'll use this email to help you sign in if you forget your password. If you want to remove it, you can replace the email address with a different one.

Here's how:

  1. Click the blue icon beside the Gear icon.
  2. Hit Manage your Intuit Account.
  3. Go to the Sign in & security tab.
  4. Under Sign in info, select the Email address section.
  5. Enter the new email address.
  6. Click Save.

Hey Adrian, I no longer use the education account since I graduated, but I need to create a professional account with the same email — so replacing it with a different email I don’t think will do much if it’s still registered to the education account, right?
