Buy nowOur non-profit (church) has an odd situation and it unfortunately falls around the time of the required update on May 31, 2023. We currently use Desktop premier for Non-profits 2020 and what I believe is basic payroll because we submit the tax forms ourselves. Our dilemma is that June 14th will be our last day with our current name and EIN number. On that date we are disaffiliating from our current church's denomination and joining a new one which will mean our name changes and we get a new EIN number and a new bank account.
We will have a payroll date May31st so that can still be under our current plan but then we are to have a payroll on June 14th which will still be under our old EIN.
Trying to figure out how to make this transition the easiest. It seems as though from a cost standpoint, our best bet will be to ultimately change to QB online for accounting and payroll.
My questions are:
1) Is there any way to still use the QB 2020 for accounting and one more pay thru June14th or will the payroll simply not even work? I understand it won't get updates, but will it work at all?
2) Also when we switch our name and EIN number will we need to start a whole new account or is there a way to just change the EIN number and name on our current account?
If I am interpreting things correctly it sounds like we will need to end with desktop on May 31st, then start under online QB for 2 weeks under our current EIN, then will we have to start an entire new account under our new EIN number on June 15th?
If you have any ways we could make this easier we would definitely appreciate any suggestions you might have.
Thank you in advance.
Thank you for taking the time to share the details of your concern with me, @kb111.
I'd like to clarify some points for you.
QuickBooks Desktop 2020 software will discontinue access to Payroll, Payments, technical support, Backup, Banking, and other services after May 31, 2023. This means payroll will no longer work starting June 1, 2023.
Secondly, if your business has changed its structure or owner (entity or ownership change), you can simply update the EIN and your current account. For more information, you can utilize this article: Change your legal business information for payroll.
Since the payroll will be discontinued, you can set up manual payroll in QuickBooks Desktop. This way, you can start fresh on your new church's denomination using QuickBooks Online for handling your accounting and payroll.

You can use the trial version for QBD 2021 and 2023 for the next 2 months so you have more time to weigh your options later.
