Hi Team,

We are having one QuickBooks company file with QuickBooks desktop 2016 version. But intuit doesn't supports this version currently. What are the best other current versions which compatible to migrate?

Appreciate your inputs.

Thanks,

Sateesh

You can purchase the one time license for QBD 2021 or the subscription license for QBD 2022.

Hi there, @satC.

I'm here to share information about the current versions of QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) that you can consider.

I agree with what Fiat Lux - ASIA mentioned above. In addition, the current available versions of QBDT are 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022. To begin your download, go to the Downloads & Updates page to get the download link for your version of QuickBooks.

Once you have your new preferred QBDT version, you can migrate your company file to the new one.

Before we proceed, create a backup file from your old company file first. Here's how:

  1. In QBDT, go to the File menu and select Switch to Single-user Mode.
  2. Go to the File menu again and hover over Back up Company. Then select Create Local Backup.
  3. In the window, select Local Backup and then Next.
  4. In the Local Backup Only section, select Browse and select where you want to save your backup company file.
  5. When you're ready, select OK.
  6. Click Save it now and Next.

For more information about creating a backup file, please refer to this article: Back up your QuickBooks Desktop company file.

Once done, you can now proceed with restoring it to the new version. Here's how to do it:

  1. Make sure all users are logged out of your company file.
  2. Open your new version of QBDT, then go to the File menu and select Open or Restore Company.
  3. Click Restore a backup copy and then click Local backup
  4. Browse your computer for your company file. You wrote down the file location in Step 1. Select and then click Open
  5. Sign in to your company file as an admin user. Before you upgrade, QuickBooks automatically creates a backup of your existing company file. You can select Change this default location to save the back-up in a specific folder.
  6. Choose Update Now to start the upgrade.
  7. Click Done.

You can check out this article for further guidance with migrating your company file: Upgrade your company files after you switch to a new version of QuickBooks Desktop.

@FritzF  The OP's question is, "What are the best other current versions which compatible to migrate?"

You did not answer the question. You gave steps to upgrade a file, which the OP did not ask about.

Not really, until now I got no answer. I have seen that at some point QB decided to introduce some password protection stuff (being polite here) which I really want to avoid. So I need to know what is in this update. Otherwise I remain with my (terribly slow on assemblies) 2016

I'll share some info about QuickBooks password protection, jaapkrijger.

To ensure the protection of your critical data, QuickBooks Desktop requires passwords to protect data files. Passwords required must be changed every 90 days. QuickBooks prompts you to change your password near the end of the 90 days as well as on the expiration date itself.

To learn more about Password security, check out this article: Password security for QuickBooks Desktop

Otherwise, you can visit our Data and security page for more insights about managing your Intuit account, log in, password, profile, security, and data.

Thank you for reaching out to us here, and please let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.

Hi there, @satC.

Thanks for getting back to us. I'll share some details about migrating your data from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to QuickBooks Online (QBO).

To migrate or move your data from QBDT to QBO, you’ll need to upgrade your software to the latest version. You can use the trial version to do this.

Please refer to these steps:

  1. Back up your QBDT 2016 data first. You can follow the steps I shared above or refer to this article: Back up your QuickBooks Desktop company file.
  2. Download a free trial of QBDT 2022 (ensure your computer meets the system requirements for the 2022 version).
  3. Restore your QBDT 2016 data on your QBDT 2021 free trial.

Once done, you can now proceed with migrating your QBDT file to QBO. The steps to do this may differ depending on the QBDT version you're using. For further guidance, check out this article and proceed to Steps 2 and 3Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.

For more tips and other resources, I recommend visiting our website for future reference: Self-help articles.

Please post again or leave a comment in this thread if you have follow-up questions about the process or anything else. I'll be more than willing to assist. Take care.

@satC

1. Prepare your new blank QBO account.

2. Install the trial version for QBD 2022 Enterprise

3. Upgrade your QBD 2016 file on QBD 2022 Enterprise and convert it to QBO. Otherwise, you need to install the trial version for QBD 2019 as the stepping store.
