I have a customer that, when attempting to open another company file from either the history menu, or by selecting Open Company File from within the app, is immediately booted from the program. There is no issue when opening the same company files by manually navigating to the folder they are in, then double clicking them. When starting QuickBooks after exiting/crashing the program doesn't have any issue opening the most recent company file. The crash only happens if you attempt to open a different company file from within the program.
Hi there, GrumblePuss.
Thanks for reaching out for support here in the Community. I want to make sure you're able to use your QuickBooks Desktop account without it crashing.
In this case, I recommend running the Quick Fix My Program from the QuickBooks Tool Hub. If you haven't already, you'll need to download the Tool Hub first. Once you've done that:
1. Select Program Problems in the QuickBooks Tool Hub.
2. Choose Quick Fix my Program.
3. Start QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.
The following article provides additional info on this process as well as other solutions: Fix issues when QuickBooks has stopped working
Please give this a try and let me know how things go afterward. I'll be here if you need assistance with anything else.
Are you running QB on Win 11?
Yes, it is running on Windows 11.
I have attempted running the quick fix option in the tool hub, but the same problem is occurring.
Thanks for returning here, @GrumblePuss. We appreciate the additional info you shared here. Moreover, we recognize your effort in performing the steps provided by my colleague. This time allow us to chime in and route you to the best possible help.
Since you performed the Quick Fix option. We recommend contacting QuickBooks Desktop Live Support. They're an expert in locating the root cause of the error of your company file to why it isn't opening to your QBDT account. Moreover, their tools are equipped to pull up your account in a secure environment.
Here's how:

I've noticed some users reporting this crashing issue while running QBD 2021-2023 on Win 11 over the past few weeks. Perhaps the root cause is the Windows update conflict with QuickBooks.
Alright. So far, tons of fun. I have done a full uninstall/re-install of QB Desktop. Same problem continues. I was able to find a common error in the logs each time the user attempts to switch company files, and that is ntdll.dll. Looks to be some kind of heap error, so a possible memory leak when attempting to switch company files. I have made sure the program is updated to the latest version available of QuickBooks Desktop 2022, but the problem continues. Running a full sfc /scannow and dism scan and repair. I'll let you know if those do anything.
In the meantime, any ideas?
Hi there, @GrumblePuss. I appreciate you getting back here. I'm aware of how difficult it can be to be unable to access your company file. I'll provide additional measures you can take in troubleshooting.
Sharing the steps you've performed is a helpful way for me to provide other troubleshooting steps you haven't tried yet. Since you've already ensured that your QBDT is updated, we can move your company file to another location and open it. Let me guide you on how:
If this works, the file location is the issue. That said, you have to move your company file to a new folder. If you share your file on a network, you’ll need to share the new folder. If the same thing happens, it might be due to data damage. To fix this, you can restore the recent backup of that company file.
To know more, read this article for reference: Can't open your company file in QuickBooks Desktop.
However, if the issue still persists, I recommend contacting our Technical support team to investigate the issue further. Once connected, you can also request a screen-sharing session so they can review your account setup. Doing so will help them identify the root cause of the error and guide you in fixing it. Here's how:
In the meantime, you can access your company files by manually opening them directly in the folder where they are located.
You're always welcome to post a question again if you have other concerns regarding accessing your company file. I can assist right around the corner. Have a good one.
The funny thing is that there is no issue when opening the company files directly. This error only happens if there is already a company file open and there is an attempt made to switch to another company.
If you select the option to open a company file from the file menu, the program crashes when attempting to open the file select dialog box. The same issue happens if you select a company from the list of previous companies in the file menu.
Again, there is no issue opening files and working in them if you navigate to the company file in file explorer and click on it. There is also no issue when opening quick books and it automatically opens the most recent company file.
