Quickbooks crashes when setting printer margins in templates

We just installed a Star TSP143III receipt printer. I've set up a custom template that looks good, but we get a warning about printing outside of margins...

Printer margins are set to 0.00 in Control Panel, however, Quickbooks seems to think that they are 0.50. I can change the top and bottom to 0.00, however setting anything other than 0.50 in the left/right causes Quickbooks to hang for a few seconds, then crash.

Does anyone have a fix or advice on this? I have all the latest updates/fixes. I've attached a screenshot of what I believe to be the most relevant error in Event Viewer.

Quickbooks crashes when setting printer margins in templates

Hello, bowtie_david.

Welcome to QuickBooks Community. I'll share some steps to ensure you're able to print checks.

Here's how to rename the QBprint.qbp file:

  1. Locate the QBPrint.qbp file.
Quick tip: You might need to display hidden files and folders or search for files using Windows to find these files in Windows.
    • Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7 and Vista: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks 20XX
Note: 20XX represents the version of your QuickBooks
    • Server 2008 and Server 2012: C:\Program Data\Intuit\QuickBooks year and C:\Users\**remote user**\AppData\Roaming\Intuit\ YEAR VERSION\TSPrinterSettings
Note: Terminal Service users report finding duplicate copies of the Qbprint.qbp file with the stored client data files; double-check all folders for odd instances.
  2. Right-click the QBprint.qbp file for your QuickBooks version and select Rename.
  3. Add the word old to the file name (i.e. QBPrint.qbp.old)
  4. Open QuickBooks Desktop.
  5. From the File menu, select Printer Setup.
  6. Select any transaction in the Form Name list and select OK. This will create a new QBprint.qbp file.
Note: You do not have to do this for every transaction.
  7. Try to open and print any transaction.

Quickbooks crashes when setting printer margins in templates

Good day, @bowtie_david.

Thanks for getting back to this thread and verifying your concern.

Since you're experiencing errors when printing in QuickBooks, I'd recommend performing these troubleshooting steps to fix it:

  1. Turn off the printer, restart your computer, and then turn the printer back on.
  2. Make sure the printer paper is loaded correctly. Then, select the Windows Start button. Next, browse to the Control Panel, and double-click Printers and Faxes.
  3. If the printer shows Offline, right-click the printer and click Use Printer Online.
  4. Double-click the printer and if there are print jobs displayed in the queue, choose Printer, then Cancel All Documents.
  5. Close the window.
  6. Right-click the printer, select Properties, and click Print Test Page.

If the printer is a network printer and the test page does not print, network issues could be the cause. Let's ensure that you have the latest printer drivers for your printer. Just go to the manufacturer's website to download and install the most current drivers.

If you're still getting a similar result, use the QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) tool hub to help resolve it. This fixes most of the common printing issues.

For more printing troubleshooting steps, please check out this article: How to resolve printing issues in QBDT.

Let me know how it goes by commenting below. I'll be here to further assist you. Have a great day and stay well.

Quickbooks crashes when setting printer margins in templates

ReymondO, my issue is specific to QB crashing when setting margins within templates.

Printing works from to this printer from other apps without problems. Printing works from QB to OTHER printers as well, and QB prints to the TSP143III, BUT there's always the margin reminder message, and setting margins in templates crashes QB. I included an attachment of an Event Viewer error in my original post. I would be happy to post the full XML errors, but those attachments are note allowed, evidently.

I've been in IT for over 15 years. I know how to check all of the basics. I've tried all of the suggestions in the linked articles including QBDT tool, have all the latest OS/driver/QB updates etc...
