I'm just suggesting one of the troubleshooting options to isolate the problem.

What I have learned is that QB is phasing out all desktop software and forcing us to pay monthly fees for QB Online.  My desktop stopped functioning and QB wanted $550 per year to continue it, but I am also reading that it will be unavailable soon.  I am using a 30-day free trial of QB Online and it is full of bugs.  I spent half a day on the phone with them yesterday and they admitted that the problems are widespread and they are trying to resolve them.  I don't like paying a monthly fee, and I don't like being dependent on having internet to operate my business.  Internet is not something I can depend on and now this is a liability for my company.  I preferred owning all the data and having it on my computer regardless of internet access.  They don't advertise it, but the cheapest online plan is QB Self employed at $20 per month.  If you search for it you will find it.  Make sure you are on QB USA and not Canada if you do it.  I used desktop for 30 years and I am very unhappy with Online.  Good luck!

They will release QBD 2024 next month and I'm sure they will keep supporting QBD until they can easily migrate data from QBO to TurboTax. If you only need a single user license, you can use the trial version of QB Desktop for good if necessary.

Thank you for the info Fiat.  However, $550 per year is ridiculous for my one-man handyman business.  Also, with the unresolved issues I was having with switching companies (to personal accounts), I could not trust what I would be buying.  QB Online also wants a monthly fee for each company, so I have had to find other accounting software for my personal accounts.  If QB wasn't so greedy then I could still be using my QB software from 10 years ago that I probably purchased for less than $200.

I contacted support also and I still have the same problem!  It takes me several tries to change companies because the program keeps shutting down.  I have Quickbooks on 2 different computers and it does the same thing! Shuts down when I try to change companies!  So tired of the problem!!!

That is so scary!! I have used Quickbooks desktop for over 20 years and I certainly don't want to go to online.  They took scan manager away in updated versions so I am still using 2021 Desktop Pro, and now they want to make me go to online versions.  So disappointed in the whole mess!

I can help you with resolving the error you're having when trying to switch or change company files in QuickBooks Desktop, @busydea.

 

You can use the QuickBooks Tool Hub and then run the Quick Fix my Program. It'll close any open background processes QuickBooks uses and then run a quick repair on your program.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Close your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).
  2. Get the most recent version of QuickBooks Tool Hub.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions on how to download and open the tool hub.
  4. In the QuickBooks Tool Hub, select Program Problems.
  5. Select Quick Fix my Program.

 

Once done, open your QuickBooks Desktop and try switching your company files.

I suggest scheduling automatic backups or manually backing up your files, ensuring you can retrieve them in case of problems: Back up your QuickBooks Desktop company file

I don't want to use them anymore but my accountant does and they know it.  Concerned with the privacy issues of having accounting online, that's also why I prefer Desktop.  Sheer greed and no loyalty to 20 + year customers that own small businesses.  Have to talk my accountant into using something else.   Was able to use a previous suggestion going to the C Drive and finding the file needed and open from there, but it' definately a big pain in the butt for the amount of money I am giving them each year for the past 23 years !!!

I have been a QuickBooks desktop user since 1995 and I have exactly the same problem of the 2023 QBD (that I just had to purchase because 2020 QBD was not supported) shutting down when I try to switch between my three companies.  I also wanted to avoid the online version because QuickBooks charges by company rather than by time period. 

I use Windows 11 and have tried the Hub repair - that did not work.

My solution has been to place a shortcut on my desktop that goes to the QB.data file on my "C" drive.

This works but is not the way it is supposed to be. 

I would abandon QuickBooks if I could find a decent alternative!

A client is using Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2021 and having the same issue with shutting down when trying to switch between company files.  The program shuts down intermittently when trying to close a company.   We worked with Quickbooks support, who then told us they are aware of the issue.  She received an email from Support that the issue was resolved and to update the program, but this referred to the 2023 version.  There is no recent update for Pro 2021 as of yet.  From reading through this thread,  it sounds like people are experiencing the same issue with Desktop 2023 with no resolution either.  It would be nice to be able to find a fix for the issue as it's happening on multiple computers for at least two-three months.

You are correct that INV-90451 has been resolved. It was related to QuickBooks Desktop 2023 version which used to crash when opening the file. This has been fixed in the latest release on R6_22 on the Product Information window (press F2).

 

I understand that you are facing issues with QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021 crashing when you close it. After checking my resources, there's a current report (INV-93965) regarding this problem. My Pro 2021 was updated on 9/6.  The release is R15_18.  Is that the release you're running?

The latest update on the Download page is dated 7/25, but we have ran manual update in the program in hopes that the fix for switching between companies would be available.  Thanks.

I also have had the same issue when trying to change companies.  I have tried re-building files and everything that has been suggested.  Still nothing.  When I go to use 'help' in the icon bar - it does nothing and freezes!

I have been using QB since 2004 and have never had this many issues.  Something is going on with programming and it needs to be fixed.  Not getting resolution is NOT ACCEPTABLE!  When a small business relies on this program to work and it doesn't, it can be crippling.  What happens if QB quits working at all?  There is no customers should have to upgrade to 2023 to get the software to work. (It isn't free!).  Please come up with a solution - year end will be here before we know it and this cannot continue!

This is NOT a "successful" way to switch companies!  This software should work properly.  I have done this also, and now that doesn't even work.
