Abrupt Cost Increases

Is anyone else as frustrated as I am about the recent cost increase to use Quickbooks?  I am currently running Quickbooks Premier Contractor Edition 2021 which I paid $649.99 for in 2021.  Plus the annual payroll subscription cost.  Now I'm being told that I either need to upgrade to Online Plus w/Payroll Premier or a newer desktop version, both of which will cost around $1,000 (give or take) "annually" (no longer a once every few year charge), plus the payroll subscription, plus an $8/month/employee charge.  My husband and I own a small mom and pop business (just us as employees) and I do books for two non-profits (one a paid position and one a volunteer position).  Quickbooks is pricing me out of the equation and I don't know what to do.  I have two very long live chats with Quickbooks personnel on Monday and I'm angry and confused about how to proceed.  Does anyone have any thoughts, ideas, or help for me?  Thank you in advance!

Thanks for taking the time to share your concern here in the Community, CCampbell.

I understand that every penny counts when running a business. Allow me to provide information about the price increase of QuickBooks products.

Recently, QuickBooks increased its prices to invest and improve its features. Rest assured we're working to make managing your business and accounting much easier.

If you have bought a one-time license for QuickBooks Desktop 2021, you may continue using it without access to payroll and online banking features. However, you can still manually track your payroll information outside QuickBooks Desktop. You may also consider other options from resellers.

You may want to check out this article for some updates in terms of prices and features: QuickBooks pricing + FAQs.

Please feel free to leave a reply if you have any other concerns about the price increase. I'll be around to assist you further. Keep safe!

@CCampbellWell, you have to understand the bigger picture here.

...

The bigger picture is that Intuit is getting slammed with an ocean of lawsuits and arbitration from their income tax cash grab and they are desperate to keep the gravy train rolling until it runs out of tracks.

@AnneMariee  Out of curiosity, exactly what aspects of QuickBooks are being improved?

It's certainly not the Online invoices. Or the turnaround time on releasing new versions of the 941 report each year. Or putting a stop to the data-mine that your company turned the Employee Information section into. Or the general efficiency of the program. Or... Well, you get the idea.

You may have 2 options:

1. QB Desktop 2024 Premier Plus + Enhanced Payroll. They will support it until 2027.

2. QB Desktop 2021 + a stand alone payroll app. You will register payroll expenses as JE in QB Desktop.

I have been a Quickbooks customer since 1996 with my first entries dated 12/31/95.  Companies no longer reward longevity and the many dollars I've paid in since then.  I trust and love Quickbooks as I consider it user-friendly, unlike some others I know who use it.  However, as the article stated, it hopes to help grow and help small business succeed.  I do not credit this or any accounting program with my business' success.  Only that it has helped me create solid reports for the accountant who prepares my annual tax returns.  I appreciate you attaching the link to the article, which I read, and have opened up two additional ones with provided links as I try to see what the best fit is for me.  Thank you.

I never thought about a stand-alone payroll app and I guess I didn't even know they existed.  Do they allow you to still process quarterly payroll reports, too?  Thank you.

@CCampbell

Yes. If your payroll tax obligation is less than $2500 in a quarter, you can deposit these taxes with the quarterly return (assuming a Form 941).

Yes you can continue to use Desktop 2021 (without payroll and online banking). But if your PC dies, you won't be able to use it with a new PC, because you won't  be able to activate QB 2021 after installation without it being supported.

Login to your CAMPS as the Primary Contact and find your license code there. Then chat Support and ask them to generate the activation code before June. You should be fine to reinstall your license on another machine later.

This is an outrageous cost increase.  The least Intuit could have done is allow the basic features in the desktop 2021 version such as online banking & the ability to download and import transactions from your financial institution to continue working.  You are trying to force many of us down a path we do not wish to go.  This is the trigger for me to look for alternatives.

You can use an importer tool as a workaround.

It;s a $199 one time license and you can get $100 cashback to purchase it through a partner.

I've had a similar experience. I've been using QuickBooks for over a decade, and recently they began charging me $250 a month for the desktop version. I've decided to move on for good. There are many new software options emerging that utilize AI, which not only save time but are also more accurate and cost-effective. I see QuickBooks potentially becoming obsolete, much like Blockbuster or Kodak.

I am livid!  My desktop subscription just went up 70%.  Intuit basically has a monopoly and the corner on the market so they can really stick it to the little guy.  Shame on your company.  I hope somebody comes along with a better program so that Intuit will finally get knocked off its pedestal.  By the way, Quickbooks Online sucks!

Do you need to run any add-ons? e.g QB Payroll

Yes!  I am shocked how much they just bump it up and up and this time it’s too much.  I’m a single employee company and should not have such huge increases.  I think it’s time to look elsewhere or go w-2 and no longer deal with intuit at all.  Our children won’t be able to have small companies at this rate.
