Account numbers in Chart of Accounts

I have my preferences set to use account numbers. However, when I create a new account, the account number that I give it does not show in the chart of accounts. Why?

I'm here to help you fix this, Atropos.

 

QuickBooks Desktop has a re-sorting feature that can resolve odd behaviors while working in your account. Please follow these steps:

 

  1. From the Lists menu, select the list you need to re-sort.
  2. Select the Include Inactive checkbox. If it's grayed out, there are no inactive names.
  3. Go to the View menu, then select Re-sort Lists.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Close and reopen your company file.

Thanks for your help GlinetteC but unfortuneatly, that didn't help.  It's still not showing the account number on the  account that I created.

Thanks for keeping us updated, Atropos.

 

I can walk you through some system troubleshooting steps to get rid of unusual behavior. To start, let's download the latest release version of QuickBooks Desktop to have the most up-to-date fixes. Let me show you how:

 

  1. Go to the Help menu and select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. From the Update Now tab, click Reset Update and then Get Updates to start the download.
  3. Restart QuickBooks Desktop after the download completes. 
  4. Select install new updates when prompted. 

Then, revisit your Chart of Accounts if the account number is now showing. If you get the same result, you can create a backup copy of your company file before we run the Verify and Rebuild Data Utility process. It will help us identify system errors and issues that need to be fixed.

I first did the Verify Data.  "Quickbooks detected no problems with your data."  So I ran the rebuild anyway.  Again, "No issues found".  Then I restarted QB.  The account number for the account I created still does not show the account number.

Solved.  My fault. When creating an account, there are two boxes to enter the account number.  One is at the top right, the other is below the account Description.  The box to enter account number at the top right is just labeled "Number".  The box to enter the account number below Description is labeled "Account No."  I never even saw the one at the top right and I was only entering  the account number in the box labeled "Account No."  Once I entered it in the top right, it works as it should.  Sorry for wasting everyone's time.  Thanks for your help.
