Adding classes to each line of an invoice

I have changed our settings from adding class to an entire invoice to adding them for each line of an invoice. When I go back into old invoices to make the manual adjustments, I do not see the option to add a class to each line. I only see that option to add classes to each line for new invoices. How do I make this adjustment on old invoices?

Adding classes to each line of an invoice

I've got you covered, @LauraRop.

The option to assign classes to old invoices will change once you switch the class settings from One to entire transaction to One to each row in transaction. Since the option doesn't change on your old invoices, let's perform some troubleshooting steps to get this resolved.

There are times that the browser stores frequently accessed data, thus causing QuickBooks Online (QBO) to act weirdly. In this case, let's log in to your QBO account using a private browser. This way, we can check if it's a browser data issue. To do so, press this shortcut key on your keyboard:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: Command Option P

If this works, it means that you need to clear the browser's cache so the system can start fresh. If you get the same result while using a private browser, I recommend switching to a different one.

You might also want to learn how to manage your classes in QBO. This article will guide you on how to add, delete, or restore classes: Create and manage classes in QuickBooks Online.

Adding classes to each line of an invoice

Thanks Mark. I tried both a private browser (Chrome) and and new browser (Edge) and neither gave me th option to assign a class to each line item. I did confirm that I am able to add a class to each line item for new invoices. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Adding classes to each line of an invoice

I’m here to make sure you’ll be able to add classes to your old invoices, Laura.

Since you're still unable to assign a class to each line item after trying the troubleshooting steps above, I recommend contacting our technical support. Our representatives can check the issue further and can provide additional fixes.

Here are the steps to connect with our experts:

  1. Select the Help menu.
  2. In the QuickBooks Assistant window, type in “Talk to a human.”
  3. You can enter “Unable to add classes” in the field.
  4. Click I still need a human, then Get help from a human.
  5. Select your preferred support method:
    • Chat with us (Live chat)
    • Get a callback from the next available expert

I’m adding this reference in case you want to group your items in QuickBooks Online: Group your products and services into different categories.

I'll be happy to help if you have any other questions or concerns about classes. Just add them to your reply. Always take care!
