Buying in lbs, Selling in feet in inventory

Hi! Please help. I'm at my wit's end. I've called support upwards of 10 times and each time I get a different answer. I'm in manufacturing. Think of it as playdoh. They are sold by weight (lbs), then you extrude them so they come out as long strips of shapes. They can be thick or thin. Depending on thickness, it can affect the length of possible extrusion. For example, 1 lb of playdoh can extrude 14ft of star shape. Or 1 lb of playdoh can extrude 18 feet of heart shape. I sell the extruded product by the feet, in bulk or in kits. Bulk can be 500ft or 1000ft, etc. Kits can come in 8ft, 10ft, 200ft or 300ft, with poly bags and alcohol preps.

I am unable to convert the raw material playdoh into extruded feet in UOM. Can someone please help me? No one seems to understand how to do it or if it is even possible.

Let me be the first to welcome you to the Community, @sweetesthoneybee.

You can convert the raw material into feet using the Build Assembly feature. Let's create first an inventory item for the playdoh and use lb for the UOM.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Lists menu and select Item List.
  2. Click the Item tab at the bottom and select New.
  3. Select Inventory Part for your raw material and enter the Item Name.
  4. Add a new U/M Set and select Weight.
  5. Click Next and choose Pound (lb).
  6. Tap Next twice then Finish.
  7. Enter all the necessary details for this inventory before clicking OK.

Next, create a new item for the Inventory Assembly:

  1. Go to the Item tab again and select New.
  2. Choose Inventory Assembly Type.
  3. Based on your example, you may use star shape as the Item Name.
  4. This time, choose Length on the U/M Set and click Next.
  5. Select Foot (ft) and click Next twice.
  6. Tap Finish when done.
  7. Enter the Bill of Materials by choosing the raw item you first created.
  8. Then divide the (lb) by (ft) and enter it as the quantity.
  9. Fill in the rest of the needed details before clicking OK.
  10. Repeat these steps for the other shapes.

Once you're done, you can now build assembly for the assembly items you've created. You can check this article guide to learn more about the process: Combine your inventory items to build finished goods.

If you have additional questions with the setup, do let me know. I'm always here and ready to help. Have a great day!

@IntuitLily OMG! THANK YOU SO MUCH! It worked! The critical step that was missing is Inventory Assembly step 8. Dividing the lb by ft and entered as the quantity in the BOM. No one knew how to help me and told me this was impossible to do and it was a Quickbooks limitation. I truly appreciate your help!

Hello, @Lilies2019.

You can track the products you buy and sell in QuickBooks Plus and Advanced. However, the ability to assign a unit of measure on each inventory item is not available.

As a workaround, you can integrate a third-party application with QuickBooks that offers the same feature you need.  Here's how to visit our QuickBooks App center:

  1. Login to your QuickBooks account.
  2. Go to the App menu.
  3. Type a feature of the app you're looking for in the Search Box.
  4. Click the Magnifying Glass.

You can read through this article for more insights about using the different apps in QuickBooks: QuickBooks App Center.

Lastly, you can browse the QuickBooks Blog so you'd be acquainted with the recent product updates and feature releases.

Keep me posted if you have other questions about tracking inventory products in QuickBooks.
