Can't find IIF file on MacBook

Hello, in the past I've exported my Intuit QB payroll info by way of an .iif file into my desktop Quickbooks. I'm using QB MacPlus 2022 and I have a MacBook Pro on IOS Monterey 12.5.1.  I've let a few months go by since exporting and not sure what happened but when I export, the message comes up that it exported X number of transactions.  I go to my Downloads file where I usually find the .iif file and it's not there. I've searched my MacBook and nothing comes up. I've done some online searches but can't figure our why the iif file isn't exporting to my Downloads file now.

Can't find IIF file on MacBook

Hello, TERSCO.

I'd like to offer my assistance and make sure you'll be able to locate the IIF file.

Most of the time, the default location for the downloaded files set by your browser is on your Downloads folder.

You can try locating the files on the Downloads folder on your PC:

  1. Select File Explorer from the taskbar, or press the Windows logo key  + E.
  2. Under Quick access, select Downloads.
  3. You can also find your Downloads folder under This PC.

You can also look in your browser's settings to see where it's saving your downloads. Or you may consider checking out other folders on your computer. You may have saved it in another location.

You can also modify the settings and change default download folders on QuickBooks for Mac. Here's how:

  1. Open the Safari app, then click on the Safari drop-down menu.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Ensure that the General tab is selected, then change the File Download Location to wherever you want.

If you're still unable to locate it, I propose downloading it again in your Payroll settings. Then, import it to your Mac program.

However, If you're getting the same result after trying them out, I'd suggest calling us. We can try a few more troubleshooting steps to ensure you can locate the downloaded IIF file.

Here's how to get our contact number:

  1. Go to this link https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact.
  2. Select QuickBooks Mac Desktop.
  3. Click the Using QuickBooks for Mac topic.
  4. Scroll down and click the Get Phone Number button.

Additionally, let me share this resource to guide you fix some issues in exporting data: QuickBooks Desktop export troubleshooting (Mac, IIF, & One-Click).

Keep me posted if you have other concerns managing your data in QuickBooks. I'll be more than happy to help you further. Have a wonderful day!

Can't find IIF file on MacBook

Thank you for your response.  I just figured out the issue. The iif file doesn't go to my Downloads file if I'm using Safari, it doesn't go anywhere on my computer as I've done multiple file searches without finding the iif file. There downloads I perform for other website all go into Downloads with no issue.  When I just logged in to payroll using Chrome as my browser, I exported and the iif filed showed up in Downloads. So there is an issue with the export function and Safari.   This issue is now resolved as long as I'm using Chrome but I don't know why Safari has this problem.

Can't find IIF file on MacBook

I suspect the issue is you have to give Safari permission to download files from the payroll website. With Safari front most and the payroll page open go into Safari->Settings... menu. Click on the General icon. Click on the Download icon in the last that shows up on the left side.  On the right side find the payroll web page (quickbooks.intuit.com for instance). My guess is the permission is set to Deny.  Change the setting to Ask or Allow.

Hello, thank you I did check this and Safari was set to Allow downloads from QB Intuit. I do appreciate the suggestion though.

Ok.... I figured it out and it does download IFF file from ONLY one area within online payroll. You have to get to it only in one path or it won't work...

First, do make sure Safari is set to allow downloads as others have said. Then on you home screen go to the left menu sidebar and select PAYROLL, then EMPLOYEES.

Once there the screen will show a list of employees (cropped image to exclude employee names and retain privacy) and under the green payroll button there is a blue text link named: Paycheck List

Then once you select that, the next screen will list the paychecks run.

(if you don't see any, you may have to filter it).

Select the ones you wish to export and once they are checked, you will notice the header bar of the list turns black and you will see in the top left: EXPORT SELECTED PAYCHECKS button. Do NOT try to export from the upper right EXPORT pull down button as you will not see the IFF option there.

When you choose the EXPORT SELECTED PAYCHECKS, you will notice the usual little file swoosh down toward the bottom of the screen where the downloads icon is in your doc. WHOLA! Stupid that we have to figure out what they can't. Too many wasted hours.....
