I work at a brewery and we currently use QB Desktop Pro (and have for a couple years now) to handle all of our sales receipts to accounts ordering beer, and apparently the person that set this up input all of our available kegs as Service types. What we're wanting is a better way to track inventory on hand (currently just kegs of beer, no bottles or cans or anything else).... is there a better way to move those items over or is it even possible? And is it reflected on all the past transactions? I took a look just now and the option/dropdown appears to be gray-out so you can't click to change it.
We don't use QB for really much else... just receiving kegs into inventory, and then issuing sales receipts, and wanting the inventory to be reduced appropriately. Hopefully I've explained this well; I'm definitely not well versed in QB, and no one else here is, either (the joys of a small business). Any general advice on the topic would be appreciated!

You cannot Change, because that would result in Data recalculation and Chaos.
You Transition.
Edit the Service items to put a Z in the name, first character, if you will never use them again. Here is the assumption that these are Two Sided Service items, always listed on the Purchase, so everything flows to COGS from purchases.
Make the inventory item names you want. Set the price. Do Not put in Quantity on hand. Get all set up.
Take a physical inventory. Quantity and Cost on hand by Product being managed as Inventory.
Make one large Adjust Inventory screen, selecting all Products on hand, using the physical inventory info to Quantity and Cost what is on hand. Top left, pull from COGS; it is Too High, because these are still On Hand.
Now stop using the Service items. Make one Parent Level and name it Old Sales Items, slide them all under it, and make all of them Inactive. Now they stop showing in dropdowns for selection.
Now you are transitioned.

Allow me to share some information about changing service types of the inventory items in QuickBooks Desktop.
Changing the service types of the inventory items isn't currently offered in QuickBooks Desktop. As a workaround, you can create new service items. Since this option is not yet available, I'd encourage you to submit feedback, which is sent to the Product Development Team for review when determining features to be added in updates.

I'm confused because you say as a workaround I can create new service items .. Service items is what we're trying to move away from
I stated:
Rename the Existing Service items, because they are tying up the Name you want to use for Real. Edit the existing item name and put a Z in First Position, such as:
Z-Bud
Z-Red Hook
Now you can make Inventory Items, which is what I stated, and name them what you Had, such as:
Bud
Red Hook.
Go ahead and reread the previous guidance.
You should not change pre-existing items to (or from) a service or non-inventory type to an inventory type. To make the change simply make the current item 'inactive', then edit its name slightly (I add an 'x' in front) then create a new inventory type item using the prior name - so it will appear to the the same item to the users.

I unfortunately had to have a client change their inventory from service to Inventory Part. QB created an Inventory Adjustment entry that debited Inventory and credited Opening Balance Equity. Will this entry keep popping up each month?

The Inventory Adjustment that QuickBooks created will only pop up when you edit an inventory, just like your client did. If you change another inventory item, you'll see the pop-up message again.

Once done, you can now adjust the product’s quantity, value, or both. Let me guide you how:

Once done, you can run the Inventory Stock Status by Item report to check your product's quantity or the Inventory Valuation Summary report to know the product's value. This ensures your inventory is correct. Just go to the Reports menu, and then choose the said reports from the Inventory section.

Has anyone gotten a valuable answer and work around for this? I CANT edit the "service" item to anything more than a service...
