Changing the background of QuickBooks to dyslexic friendly

We have a user who needs to have the text and background settings changed so that it can be read. We have changed the text within windows for use in general but this is unreadable with the white background.

Thanks for coming by, @Hawker.

I'll share some information about changing QuickBooks' background and text. Currently, you can only switch the background to dark mode. Changing a text or font is unavailable. Let me guide you how.

  1. Go to Gear.
  2. Select Theme under Your Company.
  3. Toggle the switch button to On to enable the dark mode. See the images below.

To learn more about this feature, check out this guide: Overall appearance and behaviors using dark mode

Additionally, here's a link that covers all the tasks you can do when using QuickBooks Online: Help articles for QuickBooks Online.

Keep me posted if you have follow-up questions or concerns. I'll be here for you. Take care and have a great day ahead.

Thanks for this. My only problem is that I cannot find the gear icon. It isn't showing on either of the top two tool bars. See attached screen shot.

Hey there, @Hawker.

Thanks for following up with us and sharing a screenshot.

It looks like my colleague gave you the steps for QuickBooks Online, and looking at your screenshot, you're using Desktop. No worries, I'm here to help you out.

When using QuickBooks Desktop, the only way to have the screen appear darker would be to make the changes from your Windows settings. Don't sweat, this is an easy process and I'm happy to walk you through the steps.

  1. Click on the Windows button in the lower-left corner.
  2. Select the Gear Icon
  3. Tap on Personlaization
  4. Choose the Colors menu.
  5. Here you'll want to change the default windows monde to Dark. You can also change the default app mode to Dark if you'd like.

That's all there is to it. You can go a step further by changing the color scheme in QuickBooks to a darker color if you'd like. Here's how you can do that:

  1. Open the Prefereneces
  2. From the Desktop View tab on the left pane, click on the drop-down menu under Company File Color Scheme
  3. Pick your color scheme.
  4. Select OK to save your changes.

That should do it. Please know that if you're having some issues getting your windows settings to go over to Dark mode, you may need to seek out additional help from your certified IT professional.

Please let me know if you have further questions or concerns. Take care and have a wonderful rest of your day. You certainly deserve it!

Thanks for this. Our problem was it was clashing with the settings we had for her general use. We were having to bite a bullet and go into the cloud at some point so have gone that route. The user will be being set up in the next few days and hope that sorts it.

Thanks for all your input.

Where can we find this option in desktop.  It does not seem to be available and Quickbooks needs to get with the accessibility program to make it easier for dyslexic people and those with vision problems to be able to better use their software, not just online but all the desktop versions.  Given the annual fees for the software there should be ample funds to develop this aspect so all forms, and windows properly use Dark Mode.  It should be easy to switch back and forth.

I have followed these directions and this does not remotely create Dark mode on desktop in a windows environment.   The main pages remain white.  In dark mode the main body of the pages should be black or a dark gray and the font should be white or another light color.  We should not be forced to use quickbooks online in order to make the software easier to read and avoid damaging our vision!!!

Hello again, @eivc1.

Unfortunately, a true dark mode isn't currently available within the QuickBooks Desktop product at this time.  I understand the need for this and we're always working towards our product being accessible for everyone.  I'm making sure I let our development team know this.

I'm linking this site as well for you to leave feedback for Desktop: QuickBooks Desktop Feedback.

Please let me know if there's anything else I can help with, I'm

Agree with you completely. As a person with astigmatism, light sensitivity and having bright office lights and then the background of QB desktop really strains my eyes and regular migraines. I work with my office lights off and only a desk lamp. I have one screen with everything on dark mode, my other screen with QB. It's so bright. A dark mode on desktop would be heaven sent for my eyes.

We're taking note of your feedback and suggestion, @J-Hi.

The Dark Mode option in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) is currently unavailable. Please know that our product engineers are considering all suggestions based on the number of requests and their impacts on the user interface before they're rolled out.

I understand that using the Dark Mode feature is beneficial to you. While this option isn't available, you can change the color scheme in QBDT. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Edit menu, then select Preferences.
  2. Click Desktop View from the left menu.
  3. In the My Preferences tab, go to the Company File Color Scheme and select Dark Gray from the drop-down.
  4. Select OK to save the changes.

Also, I encourage submitting feedback directly to our product engineers. They may look into this suggestion and consider adding the option in future updates. To send your feedback, go to the Help menu and select Send Feedback Online. Then, choose Product Suggestion and enter your suggestion again.

For now, you can visit our blog site so you'll be able to get the latest news about QuickBooks and what our Product Care Team is working on.

I'm still open to your replies if you have additional questions about QuickBooks. Have a good one.

Nice copy pasta. I can read this same exact response verbatim elsewhere, you know. Why even bother posting that? Do you think I'm an idiot?

I use QBO in Safari on a Mac. I found my own solution using a Safari extension called Noir, since your web developers are too busy offering mortgages and other revenue generating "features".

Your Mac desktop application is useless. Nothing more than a crippled browser window. It just spins and never even displays account information (see attachment), and it completely ignores the system setting of Dark Mode. Why even use it?

This option seems to be moved or gone. Any idea where it went?

I am using the desktop app for quickbooks online. Under the "Your Company" section, there is no option to look at themes.

Good afternoon, @Tom_Meighan

Thanks for stopping by on this thread.

The option to switch QuickBooks Online to Dark Mode, used to be a feature in the system. This was one of the beta features we have for QuickBooks Labs. We've recently removed the QuickBooks Labs and this includes the Dark mode and QuickBooks Themes.

In the meantime, you may consider checking your browser's settings on how to set it up with Dark Mode.

I hope this helps answer your question. If you have any other concerns, don't hesitate to ask. Take care!
