I converted a client from Quickbooks Desktop to Online, but they were also using Quickbooks POS. Apparently, there is no QB online POS. The business has very little in the way of retail sales, but the POS is still useful to them. Is there any way to convert that QB POS desktop version to some cloud POS that will work with QB Online? Or, is there a way to make the current QB desktop POS point to the new QB online version?
It's good to hear that you've successfully converted your client's Quickbooks Desktop (QBDT) file to the online version, @HC13. I'll provide the two alternative methods you can perform to achieve your goal.
Currently, there isn't a way to link your client's POS file to their QuickBooks Online (QBO) account. I know its importance as it helps them gear up their books from there.
First, I'd suggest looking for a third-party app that can integrate with QBO. This way, your client can use a cloud-based POS that can extend their account functionality. You can either go to the Apps menu or through the external QuickBooks App Center. I'll guide you how.
To find apps within QBO:
For the app center, let's go to this link: apps.intuit.com. Choose the US flag from the Country drop-down. Then, perform the last four steps I've provided above.
Second, I recommend turning on the inventory tracking feature in Account and Settings. That way, they can manually add their products in the program using the inventory lists and balances from their POS file.
In the meantime, both you and your client can visit this website: QBO Blog. You'll learn more about our latest news and product improvements from there.
Once done, your client can perform essential tasks in the program, such as creating invoices. To help them get started, check out this website: Video Tutorials. It contains step-by-step videos about managing their QBO account, income, expenses, taxes, banking, and inventory.
I'll lend a helping hand if you need anything else. Wishing you and your client's business continued success while using QuickBooks, @HC13.
Consider having a inventory management app with the mobile sales feature to integrate with your clinet;s QBO.
But what do I do about the inventory that converted from POS? It's a mess, as are the Products and Services as the conversion picked up 20,000 + items, basically every item sold in the retail store for the past 20 years. Client no longer has a retail store but does have about $30,000 worth of inventory that will be sold. Also, there is no way to get a list of what's now in inventory from QBO.
Is there a way to copy only items with a balance from the old system and import that into QB as the starting inventory and Products list?
Thanks
You have to clean up your data file to remove unneeded Customers, Vendors, or Items in QBW file prior migrating to QBO. You may have 3 options:
1. Utilize the Condense Data utility
2. Utilize a Deleter tool

3. Purchase a 3rd party clean up service.
I just converted my company to Quickbooks online from Desktop and specifically asked this same question to the Intuit Quickbooks persons that were assisting my purchase AND install. We utilize POS daily and were never told our Intuit POS system wouldn't integrate with QBO - I would have never bought it. This is a mess and missing transactions from 6+ week. This is very disappointing. Would not recommend converting to online if you have POS system.
