Desktop going away?

Our company uses Desktop Enterprises Contractor 21.0.  I am hearing from other businesses that desktop versions will soon be obsolete?  Where can I find information on this?

Aside from the obvious (one is online and one is desktop) what are the major differences between desktop and online?   Advantages? Disadvantages?

@HR24   Stay away from Online.  It is absolutely horrible!!  IT is glitchy and full of bugs.  They are CONSTANTLY changing and breaking things.  It's the WORST!!

But don't just take my word for it.  Use the search bar at the top of any page here in the Community to find what others are saying.

Desktop going away?

Hello there,

I wish you didn't have to go through that situation. If you are currently using QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, or Enterprise Solutions v21 accounting software, it will be discontinued by May 31, 2024. While we will no longer be supporting older versions of QBDT, new versions are available so QBDT is not obsolete.

Worry less. I am here to assist you in determining other options for continuing to use QuickBooks products.

Also, I agree with Fiat-Lux Asia's recommendations. To get through this and keep using our program for your business, you may consider upgrading to the recent version of QuickBooks Desktop v24. Not only is it the latest, but it also keeps adding new features that you can freely explore and apply to meet the needs of your business. Also, if you're unsure, you can download a free trial of the program to see if you want to upgrade to it.

Visit this article for further guidelines about downloading the free trial: Download a trial of QuickBooks Desktop.

Or you'll want to try the online version of QuickBooks, anyone using the desktop version will rethink their accounting needs. If you decide to transfer to the cloud version of the software, see this article for your reference: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/pricing/.

You can utilize these articles to compare their features, plans, and pricing:

Quickbooks online is the very very worst.  I have converted 3 companies from online to desktop.  Now it looks like they will be forcing everyone to go online?  When does this start?  2027?  I know they will stop selling any new subscriptions to Quickbooks desktop as of May or June in 2024.  I am going to find some other accounting software if this is the case.  They just don't have Online working properly enough to force everyone to it!  It is an accounting nightmare.  This is just Quickbooks way of being able to charge more for their services as Qbooks online is very very very very hard to use and even more expensive!   This change will not go over well at all.  But it is really all about money, right Quickbooks?

I can't believe they are forcing everyone to go to online eventually.  The Online version is horrible!  I will find a different accounting software if this is the case.  Shame on you Qbooks!  This is all about the money!  Online is twice as much as doesn't work!

@HateOnlineVersion

You can still purchase QB Desktop 2024 Enterprise after July 2024. If you don't need any add-ons (e.g QB Payroll, QB Payment), we can share another cheaper option to consider.

@4Gal

Can you let me know what cheaper options you speak of?

I currently have QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021 (no QB Payroll, no subscription).

@DesktopUser999

You have QB Desktop 2021 with a non subscription license, correct?

Why do you need to upgrade to 2024?

I upgrade every 4-5 years to the latest desktop version.  Ran into issues with theTurboTax import this year.  Thought I would look into upgrading to the latest desktop version available if the price was reasonable and non-subscription.

Intuit handled this situation HORRIBLY.  No communication AT ALL about availability of a new desktop version, only that the old version was going away and "here is where to access the on line version!!!"  Whoopee !!!

Started getting emails about this, no mention of availability of new desktop version.  An "IMPORTANT MESSAGE" icon popped up on the Home page in my Desktop Pro 2021 software, informing me that payroll, credit card payments and all the other available features THAT MY SMALL BUSINESS NEVER USES will be discontinued after (insert date here).  And NOTHING about availability of Desktop 2024 software - in other words, information purposefully omitted e.g. a lie (sort of like legacy media does).

Dear Intuit Corp marketing and communications people - you are out of touch with your customer base, as in likely not even in the same solar system.

so, wait until July 2024 and hope Intuit doesn't change their collective minds about this for a new desktop version.

OK, got it.
