HI,
So i'm working with the full detail of all QB transactions in a database that gets the information from Quickbooks via the QBFC detail report. One of the fields is Transaction number, which is different than the reference number (like an invoice number). You can see it by selecting it when customizing a transaction detail report in the UI. I was under the assumption that QB created this number automatically and that it was unique. it turns out it is not in my set of books - out of about 15000 transactions, there are 29 that share the same transaction number although they are clearly different transactions. Because I am getting all the fields, there is also a QB_TXNID that is definitely unique, which serves my purpose -mostly. The problem is that i was also using that Transaction number in a different area and because its not unique, its throwing errors in my math analysis.
I guess my question is how did that happen? in other words, is my system compromised somehow and could it happen again? The dates on these 29 transactions are before 2020, i haven't seen anything newer since.
thanks for any insights
Let me provide some information about duplicate numbers for your transactions, JWalter.
QuickBooks has a dedicated team who'll be able to help you take care of this. Since this deals mainly with developing apps at every phase of integration and requires teamwork, part of software creation, customer input, and flexibility over process and documentation, I recommend reaching out to our developers' team. They can guide you on how to fix the duplicate transaction numbers. You can sign in to your account or create an account if you haven't signed up yet.
Furthermore, QuickBooks offers a variety of reports that cater to your business needs. You'll only have to customize them to ensure that you'll get the right data for your business. To give you more details, read this article for reference: Customize Reports in QuickBooks Desktop.
Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns about duplicate transaction numbers. We'll always be here to assist you further. Have a nice day!

Original Question. I have transactions that have a duplicate ID number. This is impossible in a relational database, yet here I am. I'm writing the experts here. Please answer my three questions:
1. How did this happen?
2. Can I do anything that could prevent it in the future?
3. And finally, how can I resolve it now to reconcile books?
Intuit Answer [It will be easier if I break this down. First, the answer, followed by my translation in [Brackets]

[I'm writing this sentence so Google search crawlers note the topic and believe this page will have an answer. I added your name at the end to show I care. Nice touch, right? My bosses make me do this. Hate the game, not the player.]

[I know I just said I would provide information. But that's not happening. It's ok for me, though, because the search engines have already classified everything as an answer. ]

[This word salad makes almost no sense. But the best translation is,
'This seems like a problem.'
In fact, it's so bad that if want an answer you're going to have to talk to the DEVELOPMENT TEAM. -You done it up now, JWalter. ]

[You're going to want to make an account. Also, please don't ask why we have a process for users to come to us with this kind of problem. Also, don't ask how this version got out of unit and integration testing. People like you will find our bugs for us. You'll be in such a bind due to financial deadlines you won't even notice.]

[My boss said the search engines are starting to read the last paragraph, so I'm going to add random facts that are IN NO WAY RELATED to anything we've discussed this far. Oh, I forgot to add, "there are no bones in ice cream." That one is a favorite around the water cooler.]

[I didn't assist you in the first place, but I'm going to act like I did. But it gets better, I'm going to imply that I know EVEN MORE about this topic and am willing and waiting to offer more help, if only you would reach out.]
