Fix to the issue of Quickbooks won't open without Internet Explorer

Hi,

This problem appeared yesterday and has crippled our agency, a small applied Zen program in East Harlem.  I followed your instructions but it didn't work.  IE also doesn't appear on my application list.  It does appear and is checked on the Windows on and off-list box but the check disappears when I close the list box. After rebooting my laptop I still got the same QB error message.

Did I follow your instructions correctly or is there something else added by Microsoft during the last day or so stopping IE11 from being activated?  Since I can't access EI 11 I haven't been able to set it as a default browser, something I would tolerate to be able to access our QB files.  Thank you for your help.

The windows update has completely removed IE from my tablet. Cannot reinstall. Spent hours today with my IT and until QB uploads a work around I cannot open my QB at all. Went so far as to uninstall and re load QB to no avail. QB needs to fix this now!

@DIWR17

Consider to buy a 3rd party IT service to fix your issue. We can recommend one and you should make sure beforehand that they agree to refund the subscription if they fail to fix it.

So looks like not updating windows 10 won't be an option and the drop dead date is actually May 15 not June

Not updating windows is a short term solution.

Tick Tok Intuit.

What's the actual end game?

Not a long term option.

The good news is It seems not impossible to make a fix because the competition also says they depend on ie and don't officially support win11, but it works fine. So there's a plan B if need be

Fix to the issue of Quickbooks won't open without Internet Explorer

I have been equally frustrated with the IE issue.  BUT I found the fix!!  Scotley got me part of the way but only a base hit.  I hit a home run.  Do not have to make IE default just reinstall.  So here it goes.  I deleted IE because my security software kept flagging it as not updated, so I just deleted the program.  I only use QB during tax season to input my expenses, so now is the time to use QB,  I have 2019 PRO.  Feb 1st 2022 I go to plug in my business expenses and QB gives me the error Need IE, install it or else!  NOTHING IN THE WHOLE INTERNET UNIVERSE has a copy of IE 11 for Windows 10.  I reinstalled QB 2019 hoping it would find my missing IE and install it, NO luck.  I spent several days when I could, looking for a work around.  No luck. THEN EUREKA!!  I see Scotley's post and follow the instructions, not luck FUDGE!  I go back following the instructions and I noticed in the OPTIONAL Features screen an ADD A FEATURE button.  BAM! there is IE 11  I run the install and The Heavens opened up, the angels began to sing and QB is BACK BABY!!

So here is the way to get IE 11 running even if you have deleted it AND you DO NOT need to make it your default browser.

In Settings find the App and Settings button
Top third of that screen there is a hyper link for Option Features, click it.

Top of the Optional Features screen is Add a Feature button, BUT before you click it, look through the list of features below the button, if you see IE listed then this is NOT your trouble and need to turn on IE in another setting route.  IF YOU DO NOT SEE IE listed,   click the add a feature button.

It's starting to get exciting here, stay with me!

Next screen
Look for IE 11 10 9 select most recent version, click INSTALL...................
Wait for install to complete, save any other work you had going on and restart your machine.
Click on your desktop QB icon AND You should be back in business.  If not, then you went through this process for nothing and are even more frustrated. If it was successful, Yippee!! GET BACK TO WORK!

I just got it to work.and have been hunting for a solution for a week.  And it is not the myriad of websites to download IE11.  Those only work with Win7.  I deleted IE11 several months ago for various reasons.  Go to use my QB2019 and It will not work because IE is not on my machine.  I went to the settings, add option features, installed IE 11 restarted my machine and works fine.  I agree QB needs to put their pointy hats on and get this fixed by Jun 2022 or we're all toast.

Thanks for chiming in with this solution, @troscher!

This is what makes our QuickBooks Community so great; when our users come to share what worked for them! I'm making note of this feedback as well to share with our development team.

Jessica,

Thanks, I was getting desperate.  Plus my CD will not read.  I have three machines (use QB on one of them) and it will not run on any of them.  Used my credentials to download a copy to my PC and reinstalled hoping it would find I did not have IE on my machine and fix my issue NOT! I guess IE was on my machine but in a hidden folder that even an administrator could not find.  All good now.  QB needs to find a permanent fix if Windows update does push the kill button on IE and fatally disables it.

Fix to the issue of Quickbooks won't open without Internet Explorer

Hi there, AK One.

I'm here to provide some information on supported browsers that we use in QuickBooks.

QuickBooks recommends using Internet Explorer (IE) when downloading bank transactions from the bank to the system. It is also the default browser when accessing internet and other online services in QuickBooks Desktop.

I understand how important it is to keep your data safe and secure. QuickBooks Desktop works best with Internet Explorer. The connection from IE to QBDT is guaranteed to be safe.

I have articles here about setting and verifying IE as a default browser:

Keep your post coming if you need anything else with Bank Feeds. I'm always here to help.

@LeizylM You are not understanding the issue!!  IE is not supported anymore and it is not secure!  Regardless, this is my current setting for QB bank feeds because I cannot change it.  And every time my bank feeds attempt to update, I get an error message saying IE is out of date.  Please update.  I cannot add Chrome or another other browser to QB.  I cannot update IE.  This is a browser WITHIN QB.  QB NEEDS TO FIX THIS as it is out of my hands.

Hi Troscher

Thank you for your solution.  It saved our agency a great deal of trouble.  Fortunately, the bank load feature also worked properly.  When this problem first appeared, I contacted QB support. The QB staff had no idea what I was talking about.  One support person shared that if I paid $500 for QB support that they would solve the problem.  I would like to invite QB to take your solution and distribute it to QB support staff. This problem will only grow, and as more and more users run into this problem.  If QB distributes your solution the company will save money, the users will have easy access to a solution, and QB support staff will have less frustrating lives.

Thank you again Troscher.

I phoned 1-877-683-3280, the number from the QB site.  I was connected to a QB service person in the Philippines.  He wasn't able to do anything but suggested I buy a QB support service and quoted me the $500 cost.  I asked to be connected to QB technical assistance and was told that wasn't allowed.  I asked to talk with a supervisor, and he said none were available.  I then asked to be transferred to someone in the United States and was told that the international lines were down, and they couldn't reach America.   As I said in my suggestion, if this man is given the solution that was just posted when users phone tomorrow, and the next day and so on, this man and the other staff in the call center will be able to easily help the users.  Please let me know if there are any other questions about my experience.  I am concerned with how torturous this is for your staff and sort of feel responsible to phone the call center and tell them about the solution to make things easier for everyone.

Stan, you are welcome.  QB is in business to sell software and sell solutions when you have problems with said software.  Not saying the runaround you got is right for you are any other customer. It is just their business model.  If they do not come up with a universal solution to the IE discontinuance their model will not last very long.

This morning I opened QuickBooks said "we've rolled out some critical fixes" and I updated. Is it safe to update windows now?

So, when will it be fixed by removing the IE 11 requirement?  You can't reinstall IE 11 at the current version of Windows 10.  But that'd be fixing the symptoms  and not fixing the real problem. Intuit isn't keeping their software up to the current Operating System environment. Where's the update to QB2020 to fix the Intuit problem?

So, if you can't re-install IE 11 on Windows 10, how can you set it to your default browser.  INTUIT! - the news it out, IE 11 is dying and you need to fix QB desktop not just publish work-arounds that can't be accomplished!

Once done, you need to set Internet Explorer to be your default browser.

Fiat- Please stop trying to help.  Nothing you’re telling people helps and Intuit simply needs to get Desktop reconfigured to not use IE at all.  Unfortunately they’ve based the entire program around it and will need to basically rewrite the program but many of us are being patient awaiting them to do so.  I’ve completely switched to QB Online until they get this figured out.  I suggest others to do the same.  Once Desktop becomes unusable it’ll be too late unless you have access to it from a computer without the latest Microsoft update.

If you are located in the US, you can contact an IT support company to help resolve this issue. Make sure to get their guarantee to refund your fee if they fail to install IE on your machine. Their fee starts from $30 per month for one computer. Their support hours are 13/7 including weekend/holidays.

I've been an IT professional since 1975 and I've run my IT support company since 1995, when I first started using QuickBooks.  There is no solution to this problem until QB fixes their software to work within the stated direction of the major Operating System vendor (Microsoft).

NONSENSE! And all other hogwash posts.

What is so difficult to type in at Google: "ie11 download"?

The first few returns are all from Microsoft where to download it!

If that is still too difficult for some folks (assuming that you heard of the search engine Google):

(32bit)   https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40907

(63bit)   https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41628

Google it! "ie11 download" !!!

===== response ====

You can download all the copies that you want, but they won't install!  This is an Intuit problem.  Reinstalling IE 11 is only temporarily fixing the symptom!
