How to properly convert raw material from lb to yards

Hi, I am trying to find the best solution for tracking and converting a raw material that is turned into a fabric and then cut and sewn into a finished garment.

The yarn is purchased in pounds (lb), then goes to a mill to be knit. At the mill the initial input and pricing is also pounds (lb). Once it is knitted, we are provided the amount of finished yards and lbs. The finished fabric is best if used as yards as that's what factories and yields are based on when finalizing garment patterns. It makes the BOM for our finished goods line up with what the factory is providing.

I've looked at the multiple unit of measurement sets as an option for converting the knitted fabric from lbs to yards. I'm not sure if it was meant to be used to for two different units of measurements or if that is the best workaround. As we want to be able to see the amounts of yards left after build assemblies are created and not lbs.

Good to see you here, @scottnwa. I appreciate the detailed information on your concern about how you can convert the raw material from lb to yards. I'll be glad to share with you the steps in properly tracking them in QuickBooks.

Converting raw material from pounds (lb) to yards in QuickBooks Desktop can be done by setting up proper units of measurement and creating inventory items with the appropriate conversions. Let me guide you on how:

  1. Go to the Lists menu and select Item List.
  2. Click the Item tab at the bottom and select New.
  3. Select Inventory Part for your raw material enter the Item Name(e.g., Fabric), and set up the initial quantity in pounds (lb).
  4. In the Unit of Measure Set field, select Create a new set.
  5. Click Continue and create a new unit of measurement set with the following units:
  • Pounds (lb)
  • Yards (yd)

      6. Enter all the necessary details for this inventory before clicking OK.

Next, create a new item for the Inventory Assembly:

  1. Go to the Item tab again and select New.
  2. Choose Inventory Assembly Type.
  3. Enter the Item Name.
  4. This time, choose Length on the U/M Set and click Next.
  5. Under the Pounds (lb) unit) and click Next twice.
  6. Tap Finish when done.
  7. Enter the Bill of Materials by choosing the raw item you first created.
  8. Then divide the (lb) by (ft) and enter it as the quantity.
  9. Fill in the rest of the needed details before clicking OK.
  10. Repeat these steps for the other materials.

Once you're done, you can now build assembly for the items you've created. You can check this article guide to learn more about the process: Combine your inventory items to build finished goods.

Upon sharing the steps above, I'd suggest consulting your accountant. They can guide you on how to properly convert it to ensure the conversion process is accurate.

I'll add these resources that will help you with your unit of measure and adjusting your inventory for finished goods:
