Join nowQB has never allowed for customer numbers, but if you put the number in the name block then that can be done - does not look well IMO when using an address
Hi Which name block.??..I use 'Display name as' box like this but now I reached 999...it wont go to 1000...so im stuck at 999
It's good to have you here, tina44.
QuickBooks Online (QBO) automatically arranged in ascending order from lowest to highest. Then, the first letter name of your customers in alphabetical order.
Moreover, there is no limit for customer list. You should be able to enter as many customers as you want. Same goes with the Display name as field on your Customer information window. You should be able to enter more characters from there.
Here's a sample screenshot when I tried to create a sample customer:
Since you're stuck at 999th customer, this can be an issue with the browser. To fix this, we can try a some basic browser troubleshooting and star using a private browser or incognito when accessing your QBO account.
Then, try creating your 1000th customer. If this works fine with private browsing or incognito window, you can go back to your original browser and clear the cache. This is to make sure your browser functions more efficiently. Otherwise, you can try other supported browser to help narrow down the cause of this behavior.

Sorry you misunderstood...I have always given my clients numbers, not realising QB did not offer this...so Im up to client number 999...so my next client would be 1000, then 1001 and so on...so Im stuck on customer number 999, as it wont go on to 1000...
Hi, tina44.
I'm here to help and ensure that your questions are addressed accordingly.
For me to be able to provide you with the right issue resolution, could you please tell me where exactly in QuickBooks you're trying to enter the client number? It would be best if you can send me a screenshot as well.
Any additional information would be highly appreciated.
In the meantime, I'll be sharing with you the following write-ups below. This will provide you more information about merging as well as steps on how to designate inactive customers in QuickBooks Online:

Ahhh ok I can create 1000, but my issue is that 1000 is not in numerical order...so I have client 999, and when I create client 1000, they are not showing as the next client after no 999..and I have to search for that number..this is an issue as 2 staff work on the system, and if its not in numerical order we will end up creating duplicate numbers... we need to see them in numerical order on the list ~ so 1000, 1001, 1002 etc
