Import Budget by Class in QuickBooks Online Advanced

None of these apps appear to handle importing budget by class?  This is a big issue.

I was also surprised and frustrated to find that you can set up and use classes on transactions, but can't import a budget with classes.

As long as you can only use one class per transaction, I don't understand how it would be an issue to add this field to the budget import.  One way that I've seen it work with other software is that you may have multiple budget lines per account, each with a different class.

I will submit my feedback through the channel recommended in this thread, but in the years that have passed since this thread started, it doesn't seem like there's been any progress in getting this necessary feature onto the product roadmap.

more fuel on the fire!! I cannot believe this has not been implemented - then again, I can. It also wouldn't report my 1099 detail. I even contacted support and nothing happens. I will be suggesting a new software in the upcoming year because QuickBooks is too limited and buggy. I sit facing entering over a dozen class specific budgets by month with 150 expense accounts to choose from for 2023.

This is an important feature. I agree it should be offered! I've got 7 classes and 70 accounts... AND I spent a lot of time preparing my budget to import by .csv using their proposed format. At the very least QBO should make it clear the import isn't available for classes so people don't prepare their budgets expecting to be able to do it.

Hi, @franklinton23. I value your interest in importing budget by class in QuickBooks. I want you to know that appreciate your time and effort in preparing your budget to import using the proposed format. Let me share some insights about this feature.

We don't have a specific timeline as to when the option of importing budget reports with classes becomes ready. Added features in the program depend on the number of requests sent to our product developers. While it's unavailable, I recommend sending a feature request directly to our product developers. This way, they can determine what enhancements and improvements are needed to make our product more effective and convenient for our users.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then Feedback.
  2. Enter your comments or product suggestions.
  3. Tap Next to submit.

Once done, your valuable feedback goes to our Product Development team to help improve your QBO experience. You can track feature requests through the QuickBooks Online Feature Requests website.

On the other hand, I'm adding this material for more tips while managing your budgets in our system: Create budgets in QuickBooks Online.

Please extend your patience about this matter. If you have follow-up questions, let me know by leaving a comment below. I'm always here to help. Have a great day!

This is a pretty sad thread to read. 3 year of being told to "provide this feedback to our team, they are constantly working to make the product better", and still nothing. No timeline, just articles and list of app that don't solve this problem.

I was really hoping by the end of this thread I would at least have some kind of work around solution but I guess I'll have to just do Class budgets offline. Disappointed.

Hello,

Does Intuit have a timeframe yet for adding the ability to import budget by class? This is very important to our future and will be a reason that we will not renew next year if not. Also, please do the research for us and let us know if third party apps provide this feature (Transaction Pro does not) if this is not even on your roadmap if you would like to keep our business.

Thank you!

How can financial software not have the ability to import budgets by class?  Class a/k/a cost center or department is how a business manages expenses and profitability.

Are there any updates to this in 2024?

Absolutely mindboggling that QBO is marketed as being appropriate for anything with even slightly complex reporting requirments that this feature is missing.

It doesn't even seem like it would be that hard to implement.

Hi there PCC Chris,

Thanks for reaching out about importing budgets. QuickBooks Online is a tool able to help you keep track of your financials so you can compare them to the budget you set for the equivalent period. I can provide some information about budgets.

When importing budgets, you have the ability to choose if it's a Consolidated budget for the entire company, or a Subdivided budget, divided either by Customer, Class or Location. The choice will appear on the Import screen for the budgets so you can make sure it's set correctly.

If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out here.

This is if the budget is being input MANUALLY. My budget as is most every where I worked in the format of account number, class, 12 monthly amounts. It is one file in one sheet. Every other software I used could inport this. QuickBooks cannot.

Hello, I am trying to import a subdivided budget. I downloaded the sample and edited it, and then clicked through to where I could upload my spreadsheet, but it won't go past this screen. I hit next and nothing happens.

Thanks for joining this thread, @budgie315. I'd be delighted to share some troubleshooting steps to fix the issue regarding importing budgets into your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account.

Beforehand, did you encounter any specific error messages while trying to import your subdivided budget?

Usually, you can flawlessly import the edited file of your budgets into the program by ensuring you have selected the correct file to upload.

One of the possible reasons why you're having issues with uploading your budget can sometimes be caused by a stored cache and cookies in your browser. Let's try accessing your QBO account through an incognito window to determine if it's a browser-related issue. Here are the shortcut keys:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: press Command Shift N

If the private browsing session works, you can go back to your regular browser and clear the cache to improve the program's performance. Otherwise, using other supported browsers can be a good alternative too.

However, if the issue persists, I'd suggest contacting our Technical Support Team. They have the necessary tools to check your account securely and perform a screen-sharing session to investigate this behavior further.

Furthermore, you can check out this article to learn more about editing, deleting, or running a report to keep track of your budget goals: Create budgets in QuickBooks Online.

I'm always around and ready to help if you have other concerns with handling your budgets in QBO. Take care and have a good day ahead.

I am not seeing this functionality.

How do I import a subdivided by class budget from an excel sheet - I"m on the Canadian version if that matters

I eventually got this to work. I had originally downloaded the template and added some sheets to it in order to pull in my budgets using formulas. I also added columns to extract the GL numbers in order to run index matches. Then I resaved it with a new name. That workbook would not upload. I would go find it and hit next and nothing would happen.

What ended up working was to copy and paste the values from my version of the workbook into a newly downloaded template, saved without changing the name of the file. I don't know whether it was my extra sheets that I added, or the extra columns, or the formulas, or the new name I gave it... but something about the version I had saved wouldn't let it upload.

In the US version, you go to Budgeting, and to the left of "Create Budget" there is a button for "Import Budget".

(It is not under the Import menu, which threw me initially.

Hmmm Ok - I now see the import dialogue - thank you for that.

However I've hit a new roadblock.  If I ask it to upload an excel workbook it gets upset that its an xlsx and not a csv file, even though the instructions are telling me to use an xlsx.

If I use the csv file it uploads it, but it uploads it as a consolidated budget not a subdivided one even though i've asked it to.

The only xslx I could get it to even recognize was the exact template that I downloaded, without changing the name of the file. It just did nothing at all when I tried to upload my own spreadsheet, so you got farther than I did!
