Import Budget by Class in QuickBooks Online Advanced

Hi,

Our company uses Quickbooks Online Advanced.  I have a very detailed and extensive budget that is broken down by several classes.  How do I import this?  I can import a budget, but when I do this, it does not give me the option at the point of importation/creation to subdivide by class.  Alternatively, I can create a budget and set it to subdivide by class, but then I can not import into this budget.  So on the one hand I can import, and seemingly on a different hand I can get my classes.  How can I accomplish an upload with classes?

Thanks.

  "I can import a budget..."

Just curious, how are you importing a budget in QBO?

I can import a budget by clicking on the Import budget button.  The problem is that it creates and imports at the same time and does not give you the option of subdividing so that you can budget by class.  You seem to only get this option if you manually create, but then at that point, I can't import into an already created budget.  And once a budget is created, you can't change it to subdivide.

TRUE. I looked at it, I don't see how you can import budget by class/customer or edit imported budget template later.

It's nice to see you in the Community, @HC13.

I just wanted to hop in and provide clarification regarding the process of importing the budget report in QBO. Currently, the option to import a Budget report with classes isn't available. That is why it won't give you an option to subdivide it by class when importing.

I'll include this article for more details about managing budgets in QBO: Create and import budgets into QuickBooks Online Advanced.

The option to import a budget report that includes class is a great idea to implement in the future. I'll be sure to pass this along to our Product Developers so they can check and consider this in future product updates.

If you have other questions, don't hesitate to let me know. I'll be around and ready to help. Have a wonderful weekend.

You need to get your story straight.  Based on Zack E's post from 2 days after this post, we upgraded our version of QBO to Advanced so that I could "start from an Excel or Google Sheet template. Intervals for your budget can be monthly, quarterly, or yearly. Whichever works best for your business. You can also split the budget by class, customer, or location."

I CANNOT "start from an Excel or Google Sheet" if I want to split the budget by class, customer, or location.  What a waste of my time.  We upgraded our version specifically for this option.  We now have to downgrade our account and request a refund.  Is their any way you will refund MY time that you just wasted?

So since I have 12 classes, I have to create the budget manually for each account multiplied by 12..???

This is pretty disappointing that nothing has changed in the past year. QBO budgeting is a cumbersome process without the ability to import multiple class budgets, nor is there an option to copy and paste rows of information into a budget line item. To actually add in a new budget you need to copy and paste every individual cell by account by class. At least with desktop you could copy entire rows into a budget. I'd love to know if any of this is being considered in a release plan QBO in the near term. It would be greatly helpful. Thanks.

So how do you get a budget by class into QBO?   If it can't be imported.  Where does it get entered?  (We had it in QB Desktop)

Import Budget by Class in QuickBooks Online Advanced

Hello there, ccurcioLL.

Let's get this thing done by manually entering budget by class in QuickBooks Online. You'll need to turn on the Class feature and create a class name first. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Select Account and Settings under Your Company.
  3. In the Advanced tab, turn the Class feature.
  4. Click Save. Then, Done.

Once done creating a class. You can then start entering a budget. Here's how:

  1. Still, go to the Gear icon.
  2. Select Budgeting under Tools.
  3. Click Add budget at the upper-right corner.
  4. Enter budget name. Then, select Class.
  5. Click Next to enter amounts.
  6. Then, hit Save.

Also, you can run the Budget Overview or Budget vs. Actuals report to view the data. Once you get there, utilize the Customize button. In the Filter section, make sure to tick the Class box and include all the class you created for the budget. Then, hit Run report to reflect the changes.

You may want to check these articles for information about QuickBooks reports:

For sure, hand-entering thousands of budget numbers is what I want to spend my time doing when we're now paying 150/month for this pseudo-accounting software.  How hard can it be to provide the option to import a budget by class?  I was using QBO 10 years ago and frustrated with this.  I changed jobs and used a real accounting system there, now I changed jobs again and when I found out they were on QBO I thought, surely, a ridiculous limitation like not being able to import a budget by class would have been fixed in the intervening 10 years.  But no.  This is a show-stopper - I am looking to switch to a different software as soon as I can.  If Intuit could give a date it will be fixed I might hang on to avoid the hassle of switching, but of course they never commit to fix or improve anything, just empty promises of "passing it on to the development team".

When are there plans to have the class feature available?

Also, since it is not available there any APPS that can help with this?

We have over 100 classes that we need to create budgets for. Any suggestions on this would be appreciated.

Are there any updated plans to import a budget  by class? This was a main reason for our small company considering QuickBooks Advanced over a more custom solution, we may have to look elsewhere. Please provide an update or way to import a budget by class (department for us - we have 8) or a workaround where we can create these budgets - preferably by importing the data. Thank you.

Any updates on this? Just spent a GREAT deal of time setting up my budget to be imported by Class and just now realized that it cannot be done. How can you have a "subdivide budget by class" feature but not offer a "upload budget by class" feature?

How do we upload budgets by class in QBO Advanced?

I understand you are working on fixing the system so it works with classes, but what is the work-around now to upload budgets?

Can we use your template, add a column that indicates the class, and upload each class one at a time?  Will they populate one budget "file" in QBO?

Import Budget by Class in QuickBooks Online Advanced

Hi @Wildrivers1.

While we're unable to import budget by class in QuickBooks Online Advanced, you won't be able to include a column that will indicate the class. When you upload the class one at a time to populate one budget file in QBO, the system won't be capable of reading the file and determining its path.

In the meantime, I recommend sending feedback using your QBO account. This way, our Product Developers will know that this is crucial to your business and may add this feature in future updates.

  1. Click the Gear icon on the top right.
  2. Select Feedback.
  3. Enter your suggestion.
  4. Click Next.

On the other hand, here's how to use a template and import a budget:

  1. Click the Gear icon on the top right.
  2. Select Budgeting.
  3. Hit Add budget and then enter dummy as the budget name.
  4. Click Next and then Save.
  5. Once done, click Import budget from the Budgets window.
  6. Click the Sample.csv link to download the template, then save it somewhere you can easily trace, like the Desktop folder.

For more information about moving your budgets and managing them in the system, you can reference this article: Create and import budgets in QuickBooks Online Advanced.

Feel free to let us know if you have additional questions about importing budgets. I'm always willing to assist you here. Enjoy your day.

Hope QB can provide this feature soon. For those of you who need this feature please post your need for this. Maybe more requests will help expedite this solution.

Hello, Dino.

I understand how essential it is for you to import your budget with classes. We're unable to provide a specific date when this option will be available.

For the time being, you can only create a budget and manually assign it to specific classes. Click the Gear icon and select Budgeting. Then, tap Add Budget to create your budget plan.

You can also look for a third-party application that has the required capability. Go to the Apps menu or use this link to find one: QuickBooks Apps.

You can also read this article to learn more about the budget feature: Create and import budgets into QuickBooks Online.

I've also included the following resources to assist you in accessing, managing, and printing reports for future use:

I'll get back to help you if you have further questions about managing your budget data. Take care and have a nice day.

Is there an app to import budgets? We use transaction pro for journal entries and other needs but I don’t see a budget import option… we desperately need it too, we actually budget by class and client both, so what should take minutes takes days…

Just spent an hour with QB support before seeing this post (saw lots of other posts that didn't address this specific question). I will need to spend quite some hours punching in a couple of years of a nonprofit's budget. I am volunteer, so I don't get paid, but HEY INTUIT this would be a great feature (really, an essential feature) to have to encourage users to migrate from DeskTop.

Intuit -- you want people to migrate to online -- make the migration easier -- "P/L vs budget by class" isn't the first report we run to verify a clean migration -- a couple of days after migration the shock hits...of course we're upset because we had no clue that QB couldn't handle this seemingly straightforward task.

Kinda wondering what else didn't migrate cleanly that I'll find out about in a few weeks...

Peace

This is a must have feature for Quickbooks!

Crazy that you can't import a subdivided budget.

This is the kind of thing that makes moving off Quickbooks a much easier decision.

These no-brainer features that QBO does not have...can't believe it.

QBO - you must be prioritizing importing subdivided budget.

Please get back to us!
