Question regarding the set up of Bill of Materials (BOM).
Is the comment below the correct action to set up a BOM?
First, import all my inventory or items via Import Data to QB from Excel. Then I go back and create item lists and/or inventory assembly items, building the lists or assemblies from the original inventory items I imported. The quantity on hand is then affected by a sale or purchase order receipt.
Is that the correct process? I've looked up various resources and articles on the process and this is what it appears to be the case. However, I wanted to verify before importing all the items.
Thoughts? Comments?
Thanks!
Hello @strocke,
Yes, you on the right track in creating a list of your inventory items in an Excel file. Let me show you how you can import it.
In addition, here's an article you can read to learn more about the import utility tool: Learn how to import and export QuickBooks data with MS Excel files.
Once done, you can use the following content of this article for the correct steps to take in building your assemblies: Track the products you manufacture in QuickBooks Desktop.
Lastly, I've got you this helpful reference for a compilation of articles you can use while working with your inventory: Manage Inventory in QuickBooks Desktop.

Should you need to import Inventory Assembly, you will need a 3rd party app.
Thanks for the response.
One more question regarding BOM: I'm building the inventory assembly items, as you mentioned, on the Desktop version. I purchased the desktop and online subscription. However, in viewing BOM comments, the inventory assembly will not work on the online version? Or, once I complete the inventory assembly on the Desktop version, it will automatically convert to the online version? By the various questions/replies, it was a bit confusing how this would work.
Thanks!
Are you using QB Desktop and QB Online at the same time? They are 2 different products. You will need a manufacturing app to integrate with your QBO account.
