I have QuickBooks Pro 2014. For nearly a decade, I was only handling 2 rental properties, so that version was still working. However, I am now starting a new business venture and looked at upgrading. Online is not an option, desktop only. The least expensive option I found is a subscription of $799 per year. Is this now the entry cost for desktop? Are there any less expensive versions available for desktop? If not, has anyone converted from QB to a different accounting software for small biz?
It is the updated price for the QuickBooks Desktop version as of today, DebsBoykinFarm.
That is correct. Despite being a sunset edition, QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Pro 2014 is still functional. I understand how convenient for you to use our QBDT product. Currently, the one-time license purchase is no longer available.
Several companies consider QuickBooks as effective and practical solution. You can buy a subscription if you decide that QuickBooks Desktop is the best option for your company. It proved to be best business software for organizations of all sizes and types. Please visit our website for the most recent price: QuickBooks Desktop Prices.
I've also included this resource to guide you installing our QuickBooks product: Install QuickBooks Desktop.
We don't have the necessary information to answer your inquiry about whether someone switched from QuickBooks to another accounting program. We guarantee that our program is secure and flexible of adopting new technologies.
If you have further questions about QuickBooks, please let us know. We're always available to answer all of it. Have a great day.
Thank you for your quick response and straightforward answer to my question.
Unfortunately, that price annually is prohibitive, and online is not an option (which I see is less expensive).
I will appreciate if you pass along to the folks that decide these things that they are pushing smaller businesses off the platform. I have been using QuickBooks for 18 years and it's really disappointing to have to look at alternatives after all this time.
You can purchase QB Desktop 2023 Pro Plus.
If you are working solo on a desktop (PC or Mac) to manage your book and only need basic features, you should explore a free program. You can use the program for as long as you like, use all the features and enter as much data as required. There are no time limits, no usage limits, no ads (at this time). This program is quite popular in Asia and Europe.
Thank you. I did see one I called (I think) Wave that is free, but I'm always skeptical about "free." Do you know how these companies do make money? Is it free for the entry product and you just pay for more advanced services as you grow and need them?
I don't recommend Wave. You can explore this one.
Then to pay your bills for free by ACH, you can signup a Melio account for free.

Thank you for the intel!
@Giovann_G the link you provided in this response does not show a $799 per year option for desktop anymore only an Enterprise option that is $1128/yr. What is going on? I know I saw the $799 per year option for desktop Premier Plus last week and now it is gone??
As a long time QB user (since 2000) I am very annoyed that you're pushing all of us small businesses to the QB Online at $85/mo which comes to $1,020 / yr at today's prices (and who knows what you're going to charge in the future). This is insane for a small business where every cost counts. I also don't want my accounting data stored on your servers which is what I would be forced to do with the Online option.
It seems to me that Intuit is flexing its near monopoly muscle in this space.
I would like an answer to what happened to the $799/yr Premier Plus desktop option.
I just got the notification on the $799 renewal price for the desktop version which is the same cost as buying the software new, so they are charging their loyal customers 100% of the current purchase price yearly. Since I have the desktop version I am paying for the privilege of being able to open my company file every year, since I will be locked out if I don't pay. Their switch to a subscription to force you to essentially repurchase the software yearly was a horrible decision for their customers, but I'm sure the shareholders approve which is clearly all they care about. I work in software and the typically annual maintenance for existing customers is 20% of your original purchase price, and you can continue to use the software without support or upgrades if you no longer wish to pay the maintenance (provided you are not on a cloud app). Intuit has clearly decided that they no longer care about the small companies or think they have us over a barrel so we will just pay this ridiculous yearly fee. After over 25 years + as a QuickBooks customer, I'm done and clearly they do not care one bit.
I agree. This new subscription went from 371.86 last year to $799 this year. That is absolutely ridiculous. That has more than doubled. First, you forced us to yearly subscriptions for Premier and now you do this! I have no choice to resubscribed this year but will be taking this year to find a new option for our accounting software and switching.
We are a SMALL BUSINESS!
SO DONE!
Thank you for letting me know that I can continue to use without support and upgrades. That will be my option until I find a new solution. You saved me $799!
Absolutely awful and infuriating what Intuit has done with the Desktop version. Subscription yearly was an awful decision to begin with and now to raise the price double plus. I can't wait for a similar product to hit the market at an affordable price. Some one will do it and will gain a huge following. I hope Intuit loses a good amount of loyal customers. I have plenty of clients I consult for that i will be recommending leave QB as well.
My local SBDC (Small Business Development Center) provided me with names of two alternative desktop options. I haven't made the switch yet but will be discussing with my accountant before the end of the year. They are:

I have plenty of clients I consult for that i will be recommending leave QB as well.
Are your clients only using QBD Pro/Premier? Anyone using Enterprise?
FreshBooks is a cloud based app similar like QB Online, not QB Desktop.
You may consider AE as a desktop replacement or another free program if you only need basic features.
You don't need to convert anything to a new program to lower conversion costs. You can use the trial version of QB Desktop to access your historical data for good if needed.
Great! Thank you for the recommendations. I will look into those. Quickbooks has been a great product and I realize prices are rising everywhere and a yearly subscription was frustrating but accepted costs are rising and was willing to accept that part of it. But to increase the yearly price 300%??? Awful decision. Please report back your findings of the other two if you don’t mind! Thanks.
I do have clients using Enterprise. And again, it’s getting expensive for what they offer. ACH and payroll (among other features) all separate charges. Already working on another alternative for that client.
Contact me in private. We can share another option to lower your clients cost.
