Mac 2019 Multiuser Server Problem

My office updated to Qb for Mac 2019 last week. The new Qb for Mac 2019 Server app keeps dropping company files. I'm getting the attached error message.

My office is running on new iMac's which are running OSX 10.12.6. The network is a wifi network and it's only one host and one remote computer on the network.

Mac 2019 Multiuser Server Problem

I haven't used the 2019 server yet, but on all other versions of Quickbooks server, I know it was VERY sensitive to the network connection.  WIFI is a no-go.  Is it possible for you to have a wired connection to see if it works any better?

Mac 2019 Multiuser Server Problem

I haven't used 2019 specifically, but with every other version of Quickbooks, I know that the server is very sensitive to the network connection.  WiFi is pretty much not recommended.  Is it possible fo you to try a wired connection and see if it's more reliable for you?

Mac 2019 Multiuser Server Problem

Thanks for checking in with us, Oberon333.

I'm here to help you resolve the multi-user server problem. Let's get this sorted out.

Every version of QuickBooks has a corresponding component that needs to be updated for QuickBooks to function in multi-user. To help diagnose and fix these errors, download and run the QuickBooks File Doctor, which analyzes if your computer is properly set up for multi-user mode or not.

Workstations that have hosting multi-user access enabled can inadvertently go into Alternate Hosting mode and take ownership of a company file. When this happens, other users will not be able to open the file. You may want to verify that permissions are set correctly.

Here's how:

  1. Right-click the folder that contains the company file and select Properties.
  2. On Security tab, select Advanced.
  3. Select QBDataServiceUserXX and select Edit.
  4. Make sure that the following settings are set to Allowed.
    • Traverse Folder/Execute File
    • List Folder/Read Data
    • Read Attributes
    • Read Extended Attributes
    • Create Files/Write Data
    • Create Folders/Append Data
    • Write Attributes
    • Write Extended Attributes
    • Read Permissions

If your permissions aren’t set correctly, perform these steps:

  1. Right-click the folder that contains the company file and select Properties.
  2. Select Security, then Edit.
  3. Choose QBDataServiceUserXX and select Full Control, then Allow.
  4. Select Apply, then OK.

Verify if QuickBooks Server is running and if the company file is shared.

  1. Click Go.
  2. Choose Applications.
  3. Double-click the QuickBooks 20XX Server.app icon.
  4. Share the file if needed:
  • If the file is listed under NOT SHARED, select the file, then Start Sharing.
  • If the file is not listed, select + to add the file.

You can get more details in this article: Set up folder and Windows access permissions to share company files.

Mac 2019 Multiuser Server Problem

QuickBooks Server thinks that another copy of QuickBooks has modified the file.  That would occur if the file were open in another copy of QuickBooks.  All copies on QB on the network must connect through the server and not open the file themselves - only the server can open the file.

This can also happen if the file is being shared via iCloud, DropBox, Google Drive, etc and some other machine is modifying the file in their local copy.

Do either of those sound like the issue? If not let me know and I can request some log files from you to give to our engineers.

Mac 2019 Multiuser Server Problem

Thanks! Is it possible this has something to do with the server app having a location in the package contents of the Qb app AND a location in the Applications folder? I've deleted the package contents version but still having the same problem. FYI- the files on the server do not get kicked off to the "NOT SHARED" section. Instead, they are completely removed from the server window altogether.

Mac 2019 Multiuser Server Problem

Hello there, Oberon333.

Thanks for getting back. Let's get this working for you.

Let's make sure that there's not any disturbance with your network because of an intermittent connection with the service. This can cause multi user server issues within QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

You can always post here in the Community anytime you need help or if you have additional questions. I'd be glad to assist.

Mac 2019 Multiuser Server Problem

I'd like to believe it's an internet connection issue. However, my office is in NYC with a very strong and reliable connection. I've also been using Qb and the server for at least 3 years without this problem. It only started happening when I switched to the 2019 version last week. Lastly, please also understand that at any given time the host is sharing 8-10 company files. When we "lose" files from the server, it's typically only 1-5 at a time. If it were an internet connection issue, wouldn't we lose them all?

Mac 2019 Multiuser Server Problem

Welcome back to our forums, @Oberon333,

Allow me to step in for a moment and share additional information about the Multi-user server problem in QuickBooks Mac.

If you're running a Multi-user system, you'll need to make sure all the workstations have the same operating systems, and each QuickBooks file is up to date with the latest release. To check for the most recent version of QuickBooks, you can go to QuickBooks then select Check for QuickBooks Updates. You can see the steps on how to update your QuickBooks Mac's release version: Locate QuickBooks Product Version and Release

Once updated, try checking if it fixes the issue. You can want to check pages 26-29 of this QB Mac 2019 manual to know more about using the Multi-user mode: https://qblittlesquare.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/QuickBooks-for-Mac-2019-1809.pdf

However, if you're getting the same behavior after trying the recommended troubleshooting, I'd suggest getting in touch with our QuickBooks Mac Support. There they can check your company file, and can help check what's causing the error message. Here's how to contact us:

  1. Go to this link https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact
  2. Choose QuickBooks Mac Desktop.
  3. Click Company File.
  4. Scroll down and click the Get Phone Number button.

That should point you in the right support, @Oberon333.

Please update me on how it goes. I'd be glad to provide further assistance should you have any questions. Best regards.

Mac 2019 Multiuser Server Problem

I have recently installed Mac Quickbooks Pro 2019 and have the same problem of the server unsharing the 9 companies I have.  The computer is hardwired to WIFI.  We previously had 2016 and did not have this problem ever.  We have spent many hours on the phone with support and many technicians, with no results.  Has anyone solved this problem yet?

Where is properties located?

Thanks for any help.

Mac 2019 Multiuser Server Problem

Thanks for joining us here in the Intuit Community, @Zoomie.

I've got the steps you need in order to resolve this multi-user issue in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

Let's first make sure the QuickBooks server is running and the company file is shared to fix the issue. Here's how:

  1. Click Go on your computer, then select Applications.
  2. Double-click the QickBooks 20XX Server.app icon.
  3. If the file is listed under NOT SHARED, select the file, then Start Sharing.
  4. If not, click + to add the file.

Just a heads up, the QuickBooks server app should only be installed and running on the host computer. Also, make sure the company file is on the same computer the server is install on.

Then, check the Mac OS firewall settings to ensure it's set to allow incoming connections.

  1. Go to the Apple menu, then select System Preferences.
  2. Choose the Security & Privacy icon, then click the Firewall button.
  3. Select the Firewall Options button. If it's grayed out, click the lock icon to unlock it.
  4. Click Allow Incoming Connections.

Also, make sure to verify if the sharing permissions are correctly set on the host computer.

  1. Go to the Apple menu, then select System Preferences.
  2. Click the Sharing icon.
  3. Mark the File Sharing checkbox.
  4. Click + under the Shared Folders column and browse the folder where the company file is located.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Under the Users column, the permission should be set to Read and Write for Everyone or just the specific users who will be using QBDT.

For your guidance with the solution above, check this out: Troubleshoot multi-user issues for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

The Properties you're referring to will show up when you right-click a folder where the company file is located.

Please keep me posted on what the results are, it's my priority to help get this resolved for you.
