Ok, "New" invoices are here. They are terrible, and here's another problem.
If we choose to use an old template for printing/saving to PDF (because, you know, our customers are familiar with our invoices, and the new "modern" template which you can't edit or arrange is ugly and stinks) then there may be other fields that show up on the invoice if we copied it from an old one.
Things like Tracking Number, Ship Date, etc... If they were on an old invoice that you copied, they are on the new invoice as well and there is no way to remove them from the resulting invoice. Only if we use the "modern" template do they go away, but then so does everything else, like static messages we put on each invoice.
Yes, I have left LOTS of feedback for each of these issues. So please don't copy and paste the standard reply. Maybe if I clear my cache and use incognito mode it would be fixed.
@bvstone RE: Maybe if I clear my cache and use incognito mode it would be fixed.
I think the only real fix for QuickBooks Online is to use QuickBooks Desktop, which is actually somewhat useful and is real accounting software.
I wish I could make your experience better, @bvstone.
I'm saddened to hear that you've been having trouble with the latest invoice layout. The newest update of QuickBooks Online will highlight moving customers from using the old invoice experience to the new invoice experience.
Currently, QuickBooks is transitioning customers to a new invoice layout format across their web and mobile platforms. While this new layout offers improvements, some features in the previous format may no longer be accessible. This includes the shipping-related fields, such as Ship via, Ship Date, and Tracking no. field.
Since you still have the option to switch back from the old invoice format, you can still use it. However, there will be a possibility that you cannot switch back to the new invoice experience again.
To improve your experience using QuickBooks Online, you can give feedback to our Product Engineer so they will know what to do or adjust in the following updates of QBO. To do so, here's how:
If you want to personalize and customize your own and your customer's invoices, estimates, and sales receipt in QuickBooks Online, you can read and check this article: Customize invoices, estimates, and sales receipts in QuickBooks Online.

@SheandL RE: While this new layout offers improvements, some features in the previous format may no longer be accessible.
Some features? That appears to be a huge understatement.
What are the improvements? I haven't seen a list, nor can I tell what they are by using the new format.
Agreed, but since they won't let us have the data to easily switch back, I think we're screwed.
I will say there are a couple nice things in QBO that I don't mind. Filing tax forms for state and federal, sales tax calcs and filing... but that's about it. This last invoice update added at least 5 steps to me generating an invoice now.
You misunderstand.. again.. no surprise.
I am using the new invoice system.
I am using an old template.
The old template, when printed or saved as PDF, retains the fields are removed from the NEW invoice system, and there is NO WAY to remove them.
So, my choices are (while using the new invoice "experience"):
1. Use the new invoice template and have terrible looking invoices and no customization available for it, and again confuse my customers because the invoice template changed again.
OR
2. Use one of the old invoice templates I created, but have fields with data on them that is confusing to the customer.
Make sense? Both are terrible choices. And you didn't add any new features to invoicing. You removed a bunch:
- editing bill to/ship to address
- subtotals (which lets be honest, didn't work that great since they didn't know how to exclude prior discounts)
- removing the item description from the pop up when keying them in
- removing the option to save as PDF and have it auto name it Invoice xxxxx.pdf
- removing the option to remember your choices on save, exit, etc.
There is more.
And yes, I've hit that suggestion box 100s of times. Would be nice to be able to track them and see progress... but there is none, so that wouldn't really help.
I'd challenge intuit to let people alpha and beta test changes next time. Not just make some odd non-business like decisions in the back room because either the coders aren't that good, or the people making the decisions has zero experience with accounting software.
I'll try incognito mode one more time. Maybe that will help.
(Sorry to be hard on you, I know it's not you making the choices or doing the coding)...
And of course no reply once you get past what seems like their AI answers.
I think it should be renamed ANI... Artificial NON intelligence.
I have QuickBooks desktop and I am going crazy trying to get my old template back and forget about creating a new one! Nothing works I cannot even change the font!
