With the new update, when we tab through invoice fields, instead of adding a new line (as it used to) it kicks the cursor out of invoice and down to the "Add lines" gab. This is a workflow disruptor. Anyone know if this can be changed?
We appreciate you bringing this matter to our attention, MPSC. We want to ensure this matter is addressed quickly so you can tab through invoice fields accordingly in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
For the time being, we've received similar cases where users like you encountered an issue (cursor goes to the bottom part instead to the next line) using the Tab key when creating invoices.
With the new layout, you need to press the Tab key twice (after entering the details of the previous item) to add a new line item.
In keeping with this, I'd recommend contacting our Customer Care team so they can gather more details and come up with a fix. To do this, here's how:
Once fixed, you can check out this article to guide you in receiving invoice payments in QBO: Record invoice payments in QuickBooks Online.

Thank you for responding. In regards to this:
With the new layout, you need to press the Tab key twice (after entering the details of the previous item) to add an additional line item.
I'm unclear what you mean by "press the Tab key twice". If I press the Tab key after finishing the line, it jumps out of the invoice and to the "add lines" button. If I press it again (twice) it just jumps to "clear all lines" button. And so on. It just keeps going through all the other buttons and fields outside the invoice. In other words, pressing the tab key twice doesn't add an additional line item.
Again, thank you for taking the time to respond. If you have additional advice I welcome it. In the meantime I have already engaged with Customer Cares and Quickbook Cares. So far that process hasn't been helpful, but I'll keep trying.
I am having the same issue beginning today (July 17, 2024). This lost feature of tabbing to add additional lines is slowing down my invoicing process by more than 50%. Please fix this, Quickbooks!
Thanks for highlighting your concern about adding additional lines to your Invoice field in QuickBooks Online (QBO), Rikki.
We can click the parallel vertical dots on the left side of the first line item or click the Add or product or service option so you can add more.
Here's a screenshot for your visual reference.
If you still can't see the feature to add a line item, I suggest opening your QuickBooks account in a private window. This way, we can check if this is a browser-related issue. You can use either of these keyboard shortcuts depending on your browser:

I understand that lines can be added with the use of a mouse to click the options you provided; however, this requires added steps to create invoices with dozens of lines. In the past you could tab through the line and it would automatically start a new line. This was effective for entering invoices with a lot of items. Having to use the mouse to click for every new line is time consuming and ineffective. Bring back the tab to add a new line feature!
@RikkiMaybe I have no intention of buying a QBO account to test this, but there is one option you can test.
It was mentioned earlier in the thread that pressing the Tab key moves to the 'Add Line' button, which I assume to be the parallel vertical dots mentioned by one of the staff above.
If that is the case, it is likely that pressing the Spacebar after the Tab key selects that button will trigger the button and add a line.
At least, the Spacebar functions that way in other QuickBooks programs I've used. Not ideal, but at least it will only add a key press to your workflow, rather than a switchover to mouse control.
Best of luck.
QUICKBOOKS - We are also experiencing the same issue since update earlier this week. (around 7/16/2024) It take twice as long to create an invoice, the "tabbing twice" trick doesn't work and I like the other spend more time having to create lines or go back and retype everything as it skips to the bottom of the invoice. As another user stated it has cut productivity in HALF. This feature WAS working JUST FINE- Cant understand how the update was an improvement??? Quickbooks-Please undo the update if this cant be fixed. Your suggestions thus far as not productive. We know how to add a line item, we NEED the TAB over to auto generate the next line item. For those of us that create multi line invoices (line items that cant be duplicated) all day, every day and for every invoice this is a vital feature that you've removed for an unexplained reason.
Work flow disrupter - this is one of a gazillion! If we ran into one of these every once in a while it wouldn't be a big deal but every little task has a new work flow disrupter every time I log in. I CAN'T GET ANYTHING DONE! On my invoices, sometimes the line item rate just disappears after I enter it in. Some line items show the price with two decimals some won't even if you add them. On Sales Tax Adjustments, sometimes I can enter a negative amount sometimes I can't, sometimes it won't even unlock the "reason" drop down so I can't even access the adjustment. On estimates the text box for the line item description now requires you to do a pre-click before you click to edit or it automatically selects all the text in the box and then deletes with your start your edit requiring a ctrl z and redos. Sometimes templates are deleted out of the blue. Sometimes templates malfunction and they tell you ah yes we made some "improvements" you need to delete your template and make new ones (so all my pending estimates are dysfunctional?) They re-invent the wheel everyday forcing to ride with square wheels one day and then triangle wheels the next.
I love the part where you didn't read the actual concern and just answered with known garbage. Way to go QB!
