QuickBooks Automatic Update Grayed Out

I am trying to disable automatic updates, but the option is greyed out. I am using QuickBooks 23 Enterprise. It is running on a server running Server 2022. The automatic updates cause popup windows to appear when the updates complete. I have popup windows disabled, but automatic updates seem to override it. The popups are interfering with other programs that use QuickBooks. Please help.

QuickBooks Automatic Update Grayed Out

I have some troubleshooting steps to help you successfully turn off the automatic update, @hmoses.

We want our customers to experience smooth sailing while working in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). We'll addresses this accordingly so you can get back where you left off.

Ensure that you are logged in as an administrator so that the automatic update option is not disabled. Here's how to check:

  1.  Close all open processes and reboot your computer.
  2. Right-click the QuickBooks Desktop icon on your Desktop
  3. Select Run as Administrator.

Quickbooks Software Update

If the issue persists, I'd recommend running the verify and rebuild tools. This process will help resolve fatal problems when you use QBDT. Follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the File menu and select Utilities.
  2. Click Verify Data and hit OK to close all windows.
  3. If there are no problems with your data, you're done.
  4. If you see Your data has failed the integrity check, go back to Utilities and select Rebuild Data
  5. Click OK to make a backup to prevent data loss along the process.
  6. Hit OK to continue the rebuild process.

If the issue remains, please install and run the QuickBooks Tool Hub. For complete instructions, see this link: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub.

QuickBooks Automatic Update Grayed Out

The solution you provided, while helpful, did not solve the issue.

I have tried running QuickBooks as an Administrator. I have tried using the QuickBooks Program Diagnostic Tool. I have verified and rebuilt the company file. I have uninstalled and reinstalled QuickBooks 23 on the server and selected the option to not perform automatic updates. I have verified that QuickBooks is up-to-date. I have performed all necessary Windows updates. I have ran sfc /scannow (Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations).

Any further recommendations?

QuickBooks Automatic Update Grayed Out

I appreciate your effort in sharing those details and attempting to resolve this issue, hmoses.

Allow me to help and make sure your issue is taken care of.

If none of the troubleshooting steps works, then we can repair the QuickBooks Program directly from your Control Panel. This will fix any installation issues and other common problems while running QuickBooks.

But first, make sure to create a backup company file to avoid losing any of your data or if any unexpected issues arise.

To repair QuickBooks:

  1. Closeout QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Reboot the computer and tap the Windows Start menu.
  3. Go to the Windows Start menu, then search Control Panel.
  4. Choose Program and Features.
Note: If you don't see Programs and Features, select Programs instead. Then select Program and Features.
  5. Choose QuickBooks Desktop from the list, then right-click and hit Uninstall/Change.
  6. Click on Continue or Next. then Repair.
  7. Hit Next again and wait for it to start its diagnosis.
  8. Once done, select Finish.

After that, open QuickBooks and check if you can now disable or turn off Automatic updates.

If the issue persists, I recommend reaching our Support Team to further assist you and investigate the issue.

Let me know how it goes or if you have other concerns about QuickBooks Desktop. I'll be here to help. Keep safe!
