QuickBooks Desktop (Enterprise Gold) Unbelievably Slow

Edition: QuickBooks Enterprise Gold edition (Desktop)

Accessing multi-user (shared) files over the network is unbelievably slow. The primary company file is around 900MB (was previously 1.2GB before a recent condense action). It takes upwards of 60 seconds to change the company, and when you open the main company file it says something like "Reading Transactions" for much of the time. Additionally, using otherwise simple portions of the application (like editing payroll schedule) takes about 90 seconds to complete for just a single employee.

This issue occurred previously when one of the desktop PCs was acting as the host, but moving the files to a new Windows server has not solved the issue. All connectivity from desktop to PC to the server is validated to be 1Gbps with no latency, all desktops are running newer-gen Intel i7 CPUs, 32GB of RAM, and M.2 SSDs with little resource utilization on the PC while the issue is occurring (20GB+ RAM free with no CPU or network utilization). The server is also not under any resource load. The server is running QuickBooks Server Database Manager, and the files are accessed via a shared folder.

We have run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool on the PCs, we have run the verify and condense utilities, and have run the QuickBooks Tool Hub (Quick Fix my File, Quick Fix my Program). All PCs and the server have all the latest Windows Updates.

I spoke with QuickBooks support this week (Case #: 15113249709), but they told me there is nothing they can do or recommend.

I'm looking for any bold suggestions at this point, as the application is completely unusable at this point.

Run the Condense Data utility again and delete all data except 2024 for this trial purpose. How big is the file size now? Is there any difference in performance?

What is the proper method to purge older data?

The file size now is about 900MB (down from 1200MB). No difference in performance from 1200MB to 900MB.

Welcome to the Community forum, Beemer. Thank you for reaching out and providing details about the issues within company is experiencing. This information helps me pinpoint potential solutions to address this problem. Let me help you optimize your server and working stations to minimize the performance errors in QuickBooks Desktop.

The majority of QuickBooks users will find their computer systems compatible with QuickBooks system requirements. If you encounter performance issues despite meeting these specifications, consider enhancing your available RAM, increasing virtual Memory, boosting your operating system, and elevating computer hardware. It's essential to aim for an increased RAM capacity to optimize QuickBooks performance. See this page for your additional guide: Manage your computers to fix QuickBooks Desktop performance issues.

If you find the resolution above doesn't resolve the issue, let's proceed to solution #2. The performance of QuickBooks tends to diminish with the growth of the company file size. There are no set limits on the size of your company data file. However, it may interfere with system performance if your network is unable to effectively manage larger data files. In case you have a sizable file and experience a sluggish routine, you have the option to decrease the size of your company file. Implementing these alternatives may require additional time and effort. You can follow the instructions to this page: Reduce the size of the company file.

Nevertheless, it is advisable to reach out to your IT specialist for a more thorough examination of the QuickBooks Desktop configuration and seek potential explanations for the error.

We greatly appreciate your patience regarding this matter. If you have any additional questions, feel free to leave a comment below, and I will do my best to assist you. That concludes our update for now. Take care and stay safe!

@Beemer

Try opening the sample file to compare. If the same issue persists, the file size is not the rootcause. Try using FQDN rather than IP to map the file.
