Reconciling

Hi I have a business that hasn't filed in a few years, nothing is reconciled. They have just been entering sales and payments. I've started to go over first year and I've noticed that the bank account entered in quickbooks didn't start till two weeks after business started running. It's been years now any idea how to handle this as already pretty much know it's not gonna balance.

I'd be glad to help with your reconcilation, hulmez.

You can actually create a journal entry if an opening balance was not recorded when the bank account was set up in QuickBooks. This will correct the amount in the account to help you mirror the balance in your actual bank.

You also need to decide how far back you want to go. You may want to pick a date that's older than the oldest transaction you want to track in your company file. However, I'd also recommend reaching out to your account for further advice to make sure you're using the right accounts when recording the corrections.

Here's how to create a journal entry:

  1. Go to the Company menu and select Make General Journal Entries.
  2. Set the date for the journal entry. It should be the date you pick for the opening balance.
  3. Go to the Account column, then select the account you're entering the opening balance for.
  4. Enter the balance for your real-life accounts for the day you picked. Depending on the type of account:
    1. Asset: Enter the opening balance in the Debit column.
    2. Liability and Equity: Enter the opening balance in the Credit column.
  5. On the next line, select the Account drop-down and then the Opening Balance Equity account.
  6. Enter the same opening balance amount in the opposite column as the first line. So, if you entered the first amount in the Credit column, enter the next one in the Debit column.
  7. Click Save & Close.
