I came to the community for just this reason. I had to quit the software update because I was stuck at 24% for over 10 minutes.
Have you had any success with the update? Mine has been working for an hour and is still only at 30%.
It took about a half hour but it did eventually complete the update. I had to do this on my software as well as for a client. Plan to have something else to do for a half hour. Once it gets past 30% it goes more quickly.
There really should be a warning that it will take an extended period of time to do it, before you commit to the update.
I'm having the same issue. Stuck on 24%. Cancelled it. If it's having that hard of a time to update, then I don't want the update.
This isn't the kind of experience we would ever want our valued customers to encounter when updating your QuickBooks Desktop, BobbyB501. Allow me to share some steps that will ensure you can successfully install the R9_50 Release in QBDT.

I am attempting it again this morning. It gets stuck at about 23% and then slowly increases. Its been over an hour and its at 27%.
I agree that a warning would be nice to set expectations. I don't think there is anything in this update that benefits me as we are a 3 person company that uses only the payroll calculations. So, this issue just adds to my frustration with QB, its pricing and practices.
Thanks for getting back with the Community, SDP. I appreciate your detailed information.
I've reviewed our ongoing investigations and can confirm there's currently an investigation about updates getting stuck when updating to Release 9 (R9_50). Currently, Intuit's Product Investigations team is researching this for a resolution.
Since you're impacted by your update getting stuck, I'd recommend reaching out to our Customer Care team and referencing the investigation's case number (INV-112998). They'll be able to pull up your account in a secure environment, conduct further research with you, and add the account to our list of affected users. This ensures you'll receive email notifications about any updates relating to our case.
In the meantime, our investigation has a workaround mentioned:

Shortly after posting about today's attempt to update, the process completed. It took about an hour and 15 minutes.
I had the same problem on 4 out of our 10 machines. I backed out after it was stuck at 23% for 30 minutes. I will skip this one if at all possible. Intuit has become increasingly persistent in forcing updates. Hopefully they back off of this policy with the issues with this update.
Mine is stuck 5 or 6 tries at 23-26% when "writing system registry values" . Have had to cancel each update. I did notice that the word registry has a extra space after the second r "registr y" . Wondering if that's what the issue is?
That's what I thought too! But is it correct now that QB is forcing all updates to insure the security and support of your desktop plus?
I am already on Desktop Pro Plus 2024, and auto updates have been on. On R9_50 , Looks like many with same issues stuck at 23-26 percent when getting to writing system registry. And I left mine for a few hours last night. Think I will skip this update, until the techs can work out the bugs.

We are on Desktop Enterprise. I know in the past my end users have received a message saying there is an update available. They are able to skip it for a period of time. After 4 or 5 days it forces them to do the update. It is extremely frustrating to my client. It makes it hard for us to schedule the update at a convenient time.
I appreciate your feedback on the update process for QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise, TheStoreDecor. I'm here to share some guidelines for updating your company files in QuickBooks Desktop.
While the enforced updates can impact workflow, it is important to note that although skipping QuickBooks updates is possible for a certain period, the system will eventually initiate an update without the option of scheduling it. This means that users will not have control over the timing of the update and may experience unexpected interruptions to their workflow.
Therefore, it is recommended to regularly check for available updates and schedule them accordingly to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted experience with QuickBooks.
Following these rules can help ensure a smooth and efficient update process while minimizing disruptions to your workflow. It also ensures that you have the latest features and security enhancements.
Additionally, here’s an article to assist you in preparing after installing the latest version of the software: Get started with QuickBooks Desktop.

Oct 2024 update is supposed to usher in a new streamlined updating process. Update fails to install. This software never ceases to find ways to disappoint me.
Finally installed ! After business hours let it go and just to see if it would ever install. Took about FOUR and a half HOURS ! Two and a half probably stuck at the same 23-26% writing system registry values. A tech on QB's own chat also gave me some advise. So instead of clicking on any of the pop up tabs at the top or at the startup to start the install, go reset it first.
"Help> Update QB Desktop >> Update now >> Click the small box first on the left side of rest update >> " Reset Update" >> Get Updates"
Don't know if that was what did it, or just the waiting it out. But mine is installed !!
May I suggest Intuit fix the problem with the R9 version instead of providing users with convoluted instructions on how to work around their programming inefficiencies?
Same issue. And there is no way I am going to get on with help just to waste more time. I cancelled after 2 hours of being stuck, Hope a fix pushed out soon. Glad to see others are making noise about this. My file goes back decades so perhaps that is why it takes more than 2 hours. In any case I will not be trying this anytime soon. Waiting for a patch
I appreciate your patience, and this isn't what we want you to experience, Extended. Let me provide details about the ongoing issue causing delays in updating QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to R9.
Please be informed that there's an ongoing investigation (INV-112998) with updating to R9. Our product engineers are well aware and working towards a resolution. While we don't have a specific timeframe, please know that addressing this issue is a priority.
In the meantime, I suggest contacting our support team to be added to the affected user's list, ensuring you receive timely updates on this matter as they become available.
Here's how to contact them within QBDT:

As a workaround, let's download the R9 patch from the Downloads and Updates site. However, if the patch fails to install, consider uninstalling QBDT while ensuring a backup copy. Then, download the R9 version from the same site and install it using the new executable file.
Moreover, if you encounter any common issues in your company file after updating, you may find this article helpful: Verify and Rebuild in QBDT.
Please let me know if there's anything more I can do to assist or clarify updating QBDT to the current release. We're here to help you every step of the way.
I let it run over night and when I arrived 10 hours later it was updated.
Oct 21st - my frustration is that QB has known of this upgrade problem for weeks, yet are still prompting clients to install it without warning us of 1 hour downtime and potential troubleshooting required. I'm nearly 1 hour into the process, as I'm still hung at gradual 23/24/25%. Did not have hours available today for this, yet don't want to abort knowing qb doesn't have a solution to speed up the process and I'll just need to repeat it.
Also curious as to why QB can't 1) Warn me of the long downtime, and 2) Review my system OS and hardware and test against their requirements before it installs. If not compatible, inform me rather than trying and causing this lost time. Now I'm forced to wait and see whether I'm compatible, Also losing patience with QB price hikes, and pressure to move online. Recommend no one upgrade until this issue is worked out.
I am right there with you. 1 person company here and having to pay a subscription for a desktop software to track bills and basic invoices.
I am having the same issue 24% and stuck.
I think its time to look for another solution that doesnt gouge their customers and has updates that ACTUALLY work
