With QuickBooks Web Connector, every time I select auto update, within a few minutes, QuickBooks Premier returns an Unrecoverable Error 15888 42607. If I then check the status in the Web Connector dialog, I (sometimes, but not always) see something similar to this in the log:
----------paste----------
Version:
QBWC Update utility v1.1
Message:
Error connecting to QuickBooks - close any modal dialog in QuickBooks.
Description:
QuickBooks Web Connector failed to connect. QuickBooks returned the following error: <QBWC1053: A modal dialog box is showing in the QuickBooks user interface.>. Fix the problem and then click OK to try again.
----------endpaste----------
To be clear, neither QuickBooks nor any modal dialogs were open, other than the error dialog itself.
If I update the web application manually, that works fine, but if I check the "Auto-run" box and then "Hide" Web Connector, I then get crashes and QuickBooks (and sometimes the entire PC) becomes unresponsive. Sometimes the only way to recover is to reboot the PC. And sometimes it won't reboot unless I first manually end tasks related to QuickBooks. Assuming that the whole PC is not locked up, in which case the only option is to cycle the power, which of course is a terrible thing to do.
I called QuickBooks for support, and the first question I got was, "What is Web Connector?" After holding several times, and a raft of questions that didn't really relate to the issue at hand, the agent finally returned to explain that my QB was not eligible for support (thank goodness for her!) The only solution offered was an early upgrade to the latest version, but given the already outrageous cost and forced upgrades and/or subscription model, I could not justify throwing even more money at it.
Has anyone had a similar experience? And has anyone found a solution?
Greetings, @MrMark.
Welcome to the Community. I'd be more than happy to give you some information on this Unrecoverable Error.
Support is correct, if you have an older version of QuickBooks Desktop. We recommend having a new version so that your system is always up-to-date and working properly. Using older versions that aren't supported can cause glitches or even errors in the product. Here's a link to help get your system up-to-date again:

I hope this helps. I'm only a comment away if you need me. Take care!
If when you say that, "Support is correct", do you mean that they don't know anything about Web Connector, I would have to agree. But it is not at all helpful to talk about upgrading, given the fact that this has been an ongoing problem with Web Connector, spanning multiple versions. Upgrading to 2020 did nothing except cost me a lot of money, so I'd be incredibly surprised if it was just magically fixed in 2022.
FWIW, I've already read the guide. It was not helpful. I need someone with deep Web Connector knowledge to help me in an interactive way. It may be hard to describe, but it's not hard to replicate, so anyone with any interest can easily see what's going on.
Has anyone solved an issue similar to mine? Please?
Hello there, @MrMark.
Thanks for adding more information about your concern. I'm here to provide some clarification on your questions regarding the QuickBooks Web Connector.
It's generally recommended that the Web Connector should be installed where the main company file is located. This is to ensure that the guest computers would be able to access the company file without any problem.
At this point, I'd recommend contacting our QuickBooks Desktop Customer Care team to help you check what's causing the issue.
I'm also including this helpful article for more information about the Web Connector: Set up QuickBooks Web Connector
Let me know if you need clarification about this, or if there's anything else I can do for you. I'll be standing by for your response. Have a great day!
In case you do not know, QB Web Connector has always been a very arcane and troublesome piece of software. It has never worked as the very limited documentation might lead one to believe, and it has always been poorly understood by all but a very few QuickBooks support people.
With history as my teacher, the idea of removing it and just randomly trying other versions is a very dangerous idea. It is very easy to break completely, and then very difficult to get working again, at all. So even though mine doesn't work as expected, it would be beyond foolish to do random tinkering without having real-time interactive help from someone who has a deep understanding of Web Connector.
And don't get me wrong - I've made my living as a computer and network consultant, network administrator, CAD Coordinator, and general Windows helpdesk stuff. I've taught MS Windows, as well as the MS Office Suite. I am a programmer, a Certified Network Engineer, and all around a pretty handy guy around computers, but Web Connector is a genuinely troublesome piece of software. It's the kind of thing that I would never recommend to any client who doesn't have someone like me on-site, because it has always been a lot of trouble.
FWIW, I started by contacting by contacting the QuickBooks Desktop Customer Care team, where I got no support at all. That is why I posted here. I'm not looking for stock canned replies, because I've already read everything that I could find on the subject. I'm pretty good at reading, and I'm pretty good at following directions, but nothing on your site addresses my specific issue. I need someone who has already been there. Preferably an expert QB support person with a deep understanding of Web Connector, but failing that, then just a regular person who somehow happened to have the same problem and somehow found a solution.

Which QB Desktop year version do you have?
I have Premier 2010
Your version is outdated and the feature only works on a supported version (i.e QBD 2020-2022). You can install the trial version for QBD 2021 to make sure it works on your machine. Then you may decide to purchase the one time license of it if required to upgrade your version.
Well, I'm not sure why my fingers decided to type "2010", because I actually have 2020. I'm really sorry about that. But for what it's worth, I did have Web Connector working with the 2010 version, so the actual problem is not directly related to the QuickBooks version. It seems more like careless changes to QuickBooks by people who either don't consider and/or understand Web Connector.
Web Connector is not some new thing - it's been around for ages. I have personally been using it since QuickBooks 2003. To put that into perspective, Windows XP had been around for a little while, but most businesses were still using Windows 98. QB Web Connector was super-arcane and poorly-understood way back then, and if anything, the advent of QuickBooks Online seems to have further diluted support for it. Twenty years later, I fear that the guys who originally developed Web Connector aren't even there anymore, and the newer support people are just parroting the exact same advice that has never worked.
I found an document on my server, in MS Word format, dated 2003, that is word-for-word identical to one of the articles that was linked in this thread just yesterday. The reality is that neither the shopping cart vendor nor Intuit has ever been able/willing to help me with this. Every time I've ever had it working, it was because I myself happened to find my own work-around. But in every case, Intuit did an update or a forced upgrade that killed Web Connector, and the whole miserable cycle started over again.
And that brings us back around to today and my original question - has anyone else been able to make it work in the recent past? Is there a Web Connector guru in the house? Is there anyone who is willing to do a remote desktop session with me and show me how to make it work?
