When creating a new item with a subitem, the subitem name is at the beginning of the full name (e.g. the subitem name of "!inv" applied to a new item is called "!inv:<item name>"). How do I disable this?

When creating this item:

It shows this in Item List:

qbf3.PNG

As opposed to this in a new company file:

We want to disable/reenable this feature if possible because it is potentially messing with oru third-party connections. Our company file was created about 15 years ago, which may be the suspect. Newly created company files do not have this issue.

It's nice to see you here in the Community space, @Akozich. I'm here to guide you on how you can disable or reenable this feature in QuickBooks Desktop.

The item list has two display options: flat and hierarchical views. In your case, why all your subitem names are at the beginning of the full name is that your display option may have changed to Flat view.

Now, let me walk you through how you can change it to a Hierarchical view.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Lists at the top menu bar.
  2. Select the Items lists.
  3. Click the Item drop-down.
  4. Then choose the Hierarchical view.

I've also added some screenshots for your guide.

If you'd like to pull up an item report or any other report, you can visit this article. You can also customize any report that you generate in QuickBooks Desktop.
