Thanks for posting here and sharing this concern with us, @hulljohnd and @tlp97,
I want to make sure this is resolved immediately for you. While there is currently no reported issues or open investigations for the sales tax preference in QuickBooks, let's try to diagnose this issue by running some basic troubleshooting on your computer.
First, use a different browser and try to set up the Sales Tax preference and see if works.
If not, you can use a private window and login to your QuickBooks account in there. Unexpected issues in QBO are most of the times affected by the large data in the cache. This is because the regular browser will constantly accumulate data and will not remove its history automatically.
The incognito mode will not save any history, so it's a great place to identify issues in the browser. Use these keyboard shortcuts to launch a new private window:
If it works, clear the cache to resolve the issue in regular browsing.
Please update me with the result after trying the troubleshooting steps. I want to make sure this application error resolved. I'll also be right here if you need further assistance.
Thank you for the tips. I opened an incognito tab on Firefox for Mac, but I still get the error. I also tried it in Chrome and Safari and also got the error. Thanks.
Thank you for the tips. I tried it in incognito mode in Firefox for Mac (where I had the error), but it still gave me the error. I then tried it for the first time in Chrome and Safari and also received the error in both places. Thanks.
Thanks for getting back to us here, @hulljohnd.
To verify, are you using the QBO app when setting up the sales tax? If so, you'll want to reset the app by going to the Help menu at the top, and then clicking Reset App Data.
If you're not using the app, I recommend contacting our Customer Care Support so we can investigate further. This way, we can check the cause why you're unable to set the sales tax.

I am having the same issue. I cannot log into the sales tax. I can't post the transaction to the sales tax account and can't close the books. I have tried all that you listed above and still nothing. I was using the sales tax functions in all my clients QBO file just fine at the end of December.
