Hi, You can buy any version to have different types of entities & payroll options. Depending on the features you want and how many licenses you need will increase the cost. I believe quickbooks website has a checklist of comparisons that you can look at and/or call them and someone there can help you.

It's nice to have you in the Community, @backcountry builders. Allow me to share some thoughts with your concern about features in QuickBooks.

QuickBooks has different features which you can try and use. You can use any plan either on QuickBooks Online or QuickBooks Desktop with or without a payroll subscription for your business.

For QBO, we have Simple Start, Essentials, Plus and Advanced versions. In QuickBooks Desktop, we have the Pro, Premier, and Enterprise versions.

For feature differences, feel free to check these links:

@backcountry builders

If your company runs a construction business, you should choose QBO Plus to utilize the Projects feature.

Otherwise, you may consider using QB Desktop Premier. You can still buy the one time license for QB Desktop 2021 if required to lower your cost.
