I am a cpa and I get back up files from my clients so I can do year end adjustments and prepare their tax return. I have every version of QBooks so I'm compatible with everyone. I just tried to restore a file from a client that has been on QB2012 for a long time and the message was "The company file that you are trying toopen was created with a newer version of QuickBooks. Please upgrade your copy of Quickbooks. Would have been nice to tell me which version it is because if I just put it on 2019 and they are using 2017, then they can't restore. How do I tell which version it is? I tried right clicking on the file and selecting Properties but it's not there.
Thank you
RE: How do I tell which version it is?
You could ask them and then keep track of the version each client uses.
Or, restore the backup using an older version and then if you get the message you noted, try each subsequent version until you don't get the message and the file just opens.
Of course, I've texted the client and I thought about trying each version, very time consuming, but I really wondered if there isn't a way to find the version that has been backed up on the flash drive, I've wondered this for a long time. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
There's no way to tell the version of a backup or a QBW file except to try to open it. Intuit did deliver a utility with older versions of QB to solve this need, but it didn't work with newer windows and they abandoned it instead of making it work.
