Restoring Company Files

I am using Quickbooks Desktop 2023 in a single users license. I use my laptop computer as a backup for company files.  When I restore company files on the laptop, it creates new folders and files under the newest file name.  What older folders and files is it safe to delete.  The files have so many different extensions.  It would seem that it would be okay to delete the files and folders with older dates.  I could leave all the folders and files, but there are so many.  Hopefully someone out there can give me some suggestions.  Thank you.

Restoring Company Files

Hi there, @ptla

I'm here to help you restore your company file.

QuickBooks Desktop uses different types of files to store different types of data.  That said, you can search for the  file extension file type and delete the necessary files that you don't need.

Please refer to this article to see different information on how QuickBooks Desktop uses different types of files to store different types of data: File types and extensions used by QuickBooks Desktop.

If you're unable to see the file extension, you can change the folder and search options on the folder and uncheck the box in Hide extensions for known file types to distinguish the extension file type.

Please follow these steps:

  1. Go to the containing folder (C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files) and select View on the menu.
  2. Click Options and then select Change folder and search options.

  3. Select View and then uncheck Hide extensions for known files.
  4. Click Apply and hit OK.
    Show.PNG
There it will show the extension file type and quickly trace the file to delete it.

I'll add some articles as your reference in creating a company file without starting from scratch:

Thank you for your response.  It sounds like I should be okay in deleting old files and folders not related to the current company files.
