Scheduling Local backup

Hi @Anonymous

The changes we made permanently fixed the issue for us, just checked the drives where they are stored locally on the server.

I looked at Task Scheduler & the Last Run Result on our server is 0x2 as well... but we're getting 400MB QBB files.

Some ideas to try. After changing the settings, adjust the Task Scheduler to run the backup a couple minutes in the future (Triggers tab)... wait & see if it works for you. If not, try the next:

1. Change the backup destination to your Windows 10 computer, not the USB hard drive. If scheduled backups save properly to your computer then we can look at possible issues with the USB drive (I'm assuming there's plenty of available space to hold a backup on this drive).

2. Try checking/unchecking the Do Not Store Password checkbox (opposite of whatever it is currently).

3. Try deleting the scheduled backup from QuickBooks (which will remove it from Task Scheduler list). Then recreate the scheduled backup from QuickBooks side... just in case any recent QB/Windows updates aren't compatible with whatever settings were in place when you originally created the scheduled backups. I think I had to do this but can't remember too well.

I'll try to think of anything else that might help, let me know how it goes.

For QB to still not have a permanent fix is disappointing, I'm here to help where I can though!

Scheduling Local backup

Thank you!  Using the tips above, I played around with it a bit more including checking and unchecking the Do Not Store password option.  I think that may have done it, as I unchecked it, stored the password, then rechecked it again and it worked without issue from the Task Scheduler.  I also see that it ran the scheduled job correctly last night.  Glad it's fixed...not sure why it broke in the first place, but I'll take the win.  :)

Thanks @lburr and @AlexV !

Scheduling Local backup

Hi @Anonymous

I hadn't thought of unchecking the Do Not Store Password box, saving, then going back and rechecking it... would've thought it'd be the same as leaving it checked, but apparently that's not the case.

Thank you for explaining the steps you took, I'm sure it'll be helpful for others!

Scheduling Local backup

...and it randomly stopped working again.  :(

I hadn't checked the backup drive/folder in a bit, as everything was working fine.  Looked in there today, and I'm back to getting 12kb TMP files as of my May 12th scheduled backup.  Everything prior to that worked fine, or at least between when I first fixed it through May 12th.  I checked under Task Scheduler and it appears nothing has changed (still set for Windows 10, still set to not store password, etc), so I have no idea why it's not working.

One observation - and it may not mean anything - is that I have it set to store 21 backups.  Coincidentally, it broke again when creating the 21st backup.  Not sure if that's anything, or truly just a coincidence.

I'll run through the process again and see if I can get it tricked into working, but a patch/fix for this would be awesome...apparently since it seems to continue in even the most current version.

Scheduling Local backup

Got it working by deleting and recreating the backup job, and it ran fine for a few weeks...and then the dreaded TMP files have returned.  I'm the only one using this computer and this instance of QuickBooks, and am not changing anything.  I have no idea why the "fix" (such that it is) is not persistent, but it's disappointing to see that this issue has continued for YEARS.

If the engineers are truly "working around the clock to get this fixed" over the last three years, I hate to say it, but it may be time to swap out engineers, or provide them the resources to actually fix it.  I would upgrade to a new version of QuickBooks, but from all accounts, this unique "feature" of random disabling of automatic backups still exists.

I'll fix it again, and put a note on my calendar to check every 3-4 weeks so I can redo the scheduled job.  Talk about a Rube Goldberg workaround...

Scheduling Local backup

I've got the steps to change the backup settings in QuickBooks Desktop, what7.

If you are referring to your local backup, you can accomplish the task by following the steps below:

  1. Go to File and hover over Back up Company. Then select Create Local Backup.
  2. Select Options.
  3. Make changes, then select OK.

For more details, refer to this article: Back up your QuickBooks Desktop company file.

If it's for online backup, the steps are as follows:

  1. Open Intuit Data Protect.
  2. Select Change backup settings.
  3. On the Select QuickBooks Data window, choose the files you want to backup, then select ContinueNoteFor Entire PC Users, after you choose Continue, select the additional folders you want to back up on the Select other folders to back up window.
  4. Click Continue. On the Notifications Email Settings window, choose whether to be notified or not.
  5. Tap Continue again, then choose your backup time.
  6. Select Continue to save the changes, then exit from the settings window.

Once everything is all set, you can restore your company file in QBDT.

If you encounter difficulties while attempting to restore your backup file, you can use this article to help you fix them: Fix backup company file issues in QuickBooks Desktop.

I'll always be around if you need more help changing your scheduled backup settings or any other issues.
